Well, there just went $116.04. Can't wait.
Right behind you. Been playing Disgaea 4 all over again this week to get my fix.
I've been specifically not playing it so I don't have any item world fatigue going into this one, heh.
I feel you on that lol
I just have to remember that I preordered it today so I don't accidentally buy it twice when preorders show up elsewhere.
Fuck why are all these games coming out right now Goddammit.
Sigh. Pre-ordering. Life is so fucking hard sometimes.
Also, anyone who said that Laharl and the lot are old and tired is a terrible person. You are bad, and you should feel bad.
The original Disgaea's story is about eleventy-billion times better than any of the other entries', and while I know that it's a game about grinding like mad, you can't tell me you didn't love those characters, unless you're a terrible person. If you are, you should do something about that.
Eleventy-billion times better than Mao and crew in Disgaea 3 maybe, sure.
4 had a gaddamn werewolf and vampire.
That said, I'm genuinely excited as well. Watched a few episodes of ENB's playthrough and digging a lot of the streamlining. Still really glad they gave Laharl something else to wear though.
Another edit! I started thinking back to disgaea 1's story and I don't really get it. Laharl and Etna's stuff relating to his father and the red prinny chapter we're great, and I can see how someone might like Flonne's flower child love and peace lessons changing Laharl for the better. But then I remember the horse Weiner zombie kid and the entire Gordon from earth section of the game. Give me Adell or Valvatorez any day. I really hope they don't have Gordon show up.
The story in 4 was maybe meh (sardine thing got old fast), but the characters were great so it gets a lot of credit from me.
Still, I'm expecting D2 to be the best thing ever. Not sure how they'll ever top this.
I personally thought that Disgaea 2's story was utter dog shit compared to the first one. Boring as watching paint dry, and the "twist" about the main character was something you saw coming a mile away. The third entry's characters were better—less painfully stereotypical, definitely—and the story had some good parts (especially near the conclusion—fun endings, too), but it was still too convoluted.
As for your confusion about the first one, I confess to being surprised. I found it to have a magnificent story that wasn't too twisted-up, and that didn't get bogged down by too much trying-too-hard humor (unlike all of the others). It inspired some reading between the lines, but in a good way that led to logical conclusions.
Also, all of the extra endings in the original Disgaea? Fuck. Yes. So fucking good.
A few of them were great. Some of the alternative ones were downright twisted.
AFK, drooling.
To be quite honest, although I obviously love the characters from the original Disgaea and the storyline that they were a part of, I don't expect this entry to have as good of a tale. Disgaea has long been treading the slapstick road with only a smidgen of the original's darkness sprinkled in, and the localizations—with their sense of humor so reminiscent of early '90s dubbed anime—haven't helped too much. The original had nothing else to measure up to, and was appropriately blessed by the creativity of its creators. Subsequent entries? Sadly, not so much.
I would love to be surprised, though.
The intro video with Etna gives me some hope that it will have the good core story below the humor like the first, but I agree Disgaea has long since been tripping over itself.
I'm out of the gaming loop how the fuck did I miss this. Fuck why is this fall the prime time for all the games jesus.

Haha I preordered this so long ago I'd forgotten to be hype. This fall is going to be insane with all the games on my console backlog + holiday steam sales on the horizon.
Apparently there has been a snag in their initial shipments. Check your emails if you preordered
Dear Future Overlords,
We were recently updated with a small bit of news about the delivery time for the Disgaea D2 Limited Edition. Unfortunately, a small portion of our shipment has been delayed, and we will have to fulfill our customers on a first come, first served basis.
If you are receiving this letter, then you placed your order before the date of September 9, 2013. This means that your order will be shipped on time! This also means that you should at least receive a tracking number by the release date, if not the item itself.
