Large parts of Manhattan below midtown are now in the dark after a reported explosion that may have been at a Con Ed building. "Huge explosion at 14th st. All of downtown is now dark," tweeted Jesse Chan-Norris. Our own Chris Robbins adds that he saw a "massive explosion here in LES then all went dark." Check more tweets below, and we'll update once we learn more.

Update: According to the Journal, Con Ed reports that a substation equipment failure knocked out power for 62,000 customers in Greenwich Village and Lower Manhattan. The utility also briefly lost power at its central command center near Union Square, but reportedly is back up now. I'm checking twitter and didn't see anything like that too, I have MTA confirming that lower manhattan tunnels ARE being flooded, but not that it will take a whole week. I do expect some big downtime though if that's the case, and there was a fire in 1 station.

For the past decade they've been overestimating hurricanes, the last one we got was supposed to be pretty bad, and all the stores were crazy with every one buying supplies. They canceled school, and every one was freaking out about the big hurricane.

We got half a day of rain, some lulzy wind, and a couple trash cans fell over. So over the overestimating of hurricanes.

Salodin speaks truth, every Nor Easter and huge storms we have always been forecasted have turned out to be duds, and do nothing but cause profit for battery powered devices and bottled water.

I live in Springfield, Ma and ever since last year with the tornado and that freak snow storm the news gets all crazy when ever there is a "major" storm system coming our way. I doubt we will get anything like last year. Probably some rain and soggy candy.
