My girlfriend works in the mortgage industry and she says most of New York City is in Flood Zone X which doesn't require flood insurance. So basically a lot of people who are losing their homes tonight might not have flood insurance![]()
Reuters is reporting that nineteen workers were trapped inside a Con Edison power station on the east side of Manhattan by rising floodwaters. The news agency cited a witness but did not say whether the workers were still trapped or if they had managed to get out.
Reuters says that a rescue worker said the station had suffered an explosion inside.

Flood Zone X = less than 0.2% chance of a flood annually. Rates very based on a lot of factors and it's probably pretty cheap but honestly, 0.2%? That's a flood every 500 years, my gf said that generally unless the insurance is required (which it isn't in Flood Zone X) then people don't get it. Might be stupid but that's how people think.
