Mayor Bloomberg told city workers that they must show up on the job — even as other officials were telling non-essential employees to stay home (and safe).

GOV. CUOMO warned New Yorkers to stay home during the dangerous storm, but city workers had different instructions from their boss.
Mayor Bloomberg ordered even nonessential city employees to report to work Monday and Tuesday — despite risks from the storm and the challenge of commuting without buses or subways.
“We are here to serve the public, and if you can’t get in, you can’t get in,” Bloomberg said. “But we want everybody there. . . . There are all these services that . . . are important.”
The requirement — accompanied by the warning that workers would lose vacation days if they fail to comply — set off grumbling all over town.
“I don’t think the city should be forcing employees to choose between their safety and their livelihood,” sniffed one veteran city worker who asked not to be named. City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Manhattan) said his office received complaints from workers dismayed by the mayor’s order.
