Iran Offers to Send Emergency Aid Team to Stricken New York

TEHRAN — Iranian rescuers and aid workers are on standby to fly to New York City to provide assistance to those affected by Hurricane Sandy, the head of Iran’s Red Crescent Organization said on Wednesday.

“We are ready to help the flood-stricken people of America,” Mahmud Mozaffar, who leads the organization, told the semiofficial Fars News Agency.

His men stand ready to board planes and fly to the United States to help out, assuming the American government accepts Iran’s offer, he said.

“If American authorities agree, we can send our rescuers with equipment and tools to American cities in the shortest period of time,” Mr. Mozaffar said.

The United States government did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the Iranian offer. Victoria Nuland, the State Department spokeswoman who was traveling with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in a visit to the Balkans, referred the inquiry to her colleagues in Washington.

Dealing regularly with floods and earthquakes, Iran’s Red Crescent Organization is experienced in providing immediate assistance following disasters.

But the organization, the Islamic version of the Red Cross, is closely affiliated with Iran’s government. According to documents disclosed by WikiLeaks, American officials suspect some Red Crescent employees operate as spies when providing help in other countries.

Since the two countries have not had diplomatic relations since the aftermath of the 1979 hostage taking of the United States Embassy in Tehran, natural disasters have sometimes been a way of engaging in direct communication, beyond politics.

In 2003, the United States sent a C-130 military transport plane with a rescue team and an ambulance to the southeast Iranian city of Bam where 25,000 people died in a devastating earthquake, and in August the United States offered to do the same when more than 300 people were killed in two deadly earthquakes in the northwestern part of the country.

While Iranian authorities turned down the most recent offer, the United States Treasury Department temporarily lifted sanction restrictions to allow charities to send goods and money to the stricken area.

In June 2010, Iran’s Foreign Ministry and the Revolutionary Guards Corps said they were ready to help out the United States in controlling the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Still no power here. Though when i stopped home to grab clothes, there was a con ed car outside assessing the situation so that's cool. Phoned up an old work friend. She offered to cook for me and shelter for the night. Ending up being food, a shower together, and a great 45 mins in bed. Just checking my shit out before i go back in th e room. So if any good came out of the blackout, it was that. Though i had to suffer thru an hour of real housewives.

That's the order of how they fix the power so be prepared to have now power for 2 more days at least. Then again I have to deal with bullshit lipa lol maybe con ed will do you guys better.

I feel bad for the people in WVA. First 2 days? Took no Cable/Internet like troopers.

Now that the power has been mostly restored for 24 hours? Holy fuck at the bitching. And you can't explain to them that the power company is focusing on transmission lines before commercial equipment, or that they haven't fixed the power lines that go to our equipment in the mountains meaning that they're SOL until they do.

TL;DR - fucking hillbillies.

Seeing that huge traffic pileup makes me happy my bosses closed the office until Monday.

What sucks is most flooded areas are obviously backed up. In Ocean County they had to activate the mobile hospital unit from the task force because they were having to shut water down to major areas, including hospitals. It's a mess. Not only that, but the water receding is leaving like a foot of mud/muck, which is worse than the water. Several foot high contaminated water is not cool.

I'm going back in to work today but it should be a normal day. I think I avoided doing rescues with this shift I took, although with all my certs and qualifications I wouldn't be surprised if my supervisor sent me somewhere ridiculous since he's one of the incident commanders.

Is the "three person in a car" mandate only for cars going into Manhattan? Or are they forcing people to have three in a car that are leaving as well.

I don't understand how that can be a legit traffic offense. The governor can just declare a new, temporary law and start fining people for not adhering to it? Am I not understanding this mandate correctly? It sounds very fishy that people are getting citations for not carpooling.

I believe declaring a state of emergency gives the governor temporary powers to do things like this.

What's really funny is I only heard about it over the radio once I was already at work today. It's been in effect since yesterday, when I also came into work lol

So if they had pulled me over I would have been completely ignorant to this new thing and would've gotten a ticket for it. I woulda fought that shit so hard on principle.
