Port Authority Update on Conditions at Transportation Facilities

Trenton, NJ - The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reports the following update on conditions at its transportation facilities as of 7:30 a.m. today.

    Airports

LaGuardia Airport is opened. Carriers are continuing to ramp up operations throughout the day.

JFK International is opened and the airport is fully operational. Airlines are continuing to restore full flight schedules; however, flight service will vary by carrier.

Newark Liberty International is opened and fully operational and airlines continue to increase service.

Stewart International Airport is operating normally.

We remind all airline passengers to confirm flight times, departures and arrivals with the airline carriers before traveling to the airports.

AirTrain JFK has resumed limited service. Service is available between Jamaica Terminal and Federal Circle, and from Federal Circle to Howard Beach Station. Port Authority buses will provide shuttle service between Federal Circle and the passenger terminals. In keeping with the State of New York's transit emergency status, AirTrain JFK fares are suspended today.

AirTrain Newark continues to operate at full service taking passengers to the NEC where they can take Amtrak (limited services) to Newark Penn Station and Philadelphia. AirTrain Newark fares are suspended today.

    Tunnels and Bridges

The George Washington Bridge, Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, Outerbridge Crossing and Lincoln Tunnel remain open. Motorists using the Lincoln Tunnel to travel to Manhattan are advised that the City of New York is not allowing vehicles with fewer than three passengers to enter Manhattan below 96th Street between the hours of 6 AM and midnight.

One lane of the south tube of the Holland Tunnel opened this morning to bus commuters traveling from New Jersey to Manhattan. One lane will also be open for bus commuters making their way back to New Jersey during the evening rush hour.

    PATH

All PATH service is suspended until further notice.

    Port Authority Bus Terminal

The facility is open. Greyhound Bus and Peter Pan are now running full service. NJ Transit and most other carriers are running limited service today. Passengers are urged to check with carriers before leaving for the bus terminal.

    World Financial Ferry Terminal

Ferries are running between New Jersey and New York from 7 a.m. until 6:30 p.m., starting from Paulus Hook, Weehawken and Hoboken North at 14th Street and going to the World Financial Ferry Terminal in Battery Park City.

For further information, customers should go to nywaterway.com.

    Ports

The Port Authority's maritime facilities are closed until further notice.

Port Authority staff and engineers remain on site at all Port Authority facilities to inspect conditions, assess damage, and perform repair work. Our primary goal is to ensure the safety of our workers and those who use our facilities. We will resume operations at our facilities as quickly as possible consistent with safe operations.

Just be careful of price gouging, I'm sure some taxi's are doing it but they are also making boatloads because of the shortage so maybe not.

Fucking sickning people are posing as ConED employee's to get into peoples houses to rob, I hope they catch those fuckers. I heard about the fights breaking out at some gas stations, this is why you're supposed to fill up before the storm hits. I hope people keep an eye on price gougers, this is about where they tend to pop up especially @ the pump.

It's quite interesting to say the least.
What are they recommending people to do? Are there reports of this happening outside NY? Particularly CT. I'd like to warn my parents about this, but with a plan that they should do.

Man, I saw this shit coming a mile away. A major disaster in such a huge city with such an economically polarized demographic... No good at all.

My post is regarding NJ, specifically Ocean County. There are reports of people pretending to be ConEd employees elsewhere, and FEMA officials here. Obviously, don't let people inside. The actual officials are not going door to door, they have too much to assess still in areas they can't even make access too yet. This is not a new occurrence, people for a while now have been going around pretending to be gas company employees, or landscapers, and knocking on peoples doors to see if they're home. If they were home, they'd simply say sorry wrong house or are you interested in services and leave. If no one answered, they'd rob the house.

Don't let them in, but make sure they know you're home. If they're armed, there isn't much you can do either way. Police know this is going on though and that is why ID's are required to get into a lot of damaged neighborhoods now.

.... lol talking to my mom, I guess it was on the news that CLP totally forgot about her town and never bothered to go out there. I'm glad they finally generator working....

Also, trying to call my friend with the testicle problem and I keep getting a message saying "all circuits are currently in use." I got that message when calling my mom a few days ago. Is this something Sandy-related or is my phone just retarded?

Area is over capacity. NYC for example had -a lot- of important things for networks in various basements, and while not all of them flooded many of them did.
Think of it like 9/11 except for a instead of the cellphone mast on the WTC being gone wiping out coverage for lower Manhattan, one of the links for the entire regions phone system is underwater.

Half of my facebook friends changed their profile pictures or cover photos to pictures of them in places such as seaside when they were younger. Some on the stupid chairlift thing, some undernearth the pier or looking at the rides in the distance... It's just devastating to look at. I've been pulling people out of houses, doing rescues, fighting through waist deep water all week, marking off unsafe houses and property, and nothing really hits me like some of these pictures out there. The one of the firefighter looking at his now destroyed home just kills me. As big of a man as I feel when I'm doing rescues and helping the people in need, volunteering my time and supplies, nothing makes me feel smaller or weaker than some of the photos out there. It's like going from Hero to zero and sometimes I just want to sob. So many friends without houses now, that I'm trying to find clothes and shoes for, its unreal.

I can bring some of my used clothes with me when I go to NYC next week if that's of any help at all. Won't be till next Friday though. Let me know if you're still looking for stuff then, I can hear with friends around here if they have things to spare as well.

Thankfully I've got sisters and we donate to goodwill a lot, so we always have spares. My immediate friends should be ok, everything else we have goes to shelters. So if you do have anything, definitely donate it to shelters. There are websites blogs and posts on facebook that will tell you where needs it the most.

Seaside NJ and most of the barrier island is in martial law now, and they are now forcibly evacuating people. Police are going door to door, giving residents 5 minutes to gather what they can, then putting them on buses and getting them out. People are panicking wondering why the rush, as if the island is structurally unsafe or sinking, but without gas, water, food, power, etc and unsafe conditions you just can't be there. Its too hard for police to stop looting when residents are walking around and staying like morons.

    Re: Hurricane Sandy

Hey Boyiee, any idea when they might let homeowners into Seaside to survey the damage to their home/property? My mom is flipping out and back on her anti-anxiety meds because she's obsessing over whether there's damage inside the house (the house is set like 5 feet above ground level, unlike the rest of the houses on the block). The homeowner's association has been in touch with her, but they have nothing definitive really. :/

Also, cannot thank you enough for all you've done. You're amazing for what you do.

Well, I'm coming in for vacation (lol, I know) from Sweden, so my options to look for shelters or places to donate to would be extremely limited unfortunately. As of now I'm not even sure where I'll be staying for my five days in New York anymore, since my friend on 14th has neither power nor heat and has retreated to a friend. What I'm trying to say, if your friends need shoes for a kid or a winter jacket or something, I can bring that if I can be met somewhere, but I don't really have the option to look for places sadly.
