We respond to more brick and mortar structures than anything else. Roofs becoming flooded, collapsing, or blowing off. Gas leaks and water flow are super common. Lines break. Honestly we only respond to houses for trees and people who are stupid when it comes to their fire/CO alarm.

I'm close to Philly and expecting a pretty shitty, nasty storm, especially since I live in a heavily wooded neighborhood, but I'm not anticipating the levels of shitstorm that the coast will see.

Connecticut is estimating 600,000 will be without power. I moved to Waterbury and was without power for 6 days during the hurricane and 8 days during the blizzard last year. Shit sucked so much, and because I live in an apartment I can't go out and get a generator. Best I can do is take a week off work to go across state and stay with my mom.

Same here. MD is in a state of emergency...I'm working my 2 normal days off and we're switching to 12 hour shifts. After the next week, I'll have worked 12 (non-OT) days in a row...fantastic.

So, a ton of gas stations are out of gas. Are people stupid? It's a state of emergency, its unlawful to be on the road unless you are an emergency worker. Stop filling up your cars assholes, my truck needs gas lol.

Once winds hit 50mph sustained, even emergency workers come off the road. Maybe you should have fucking evacuated like you were told to.

Only the edges of NYC were ordered to evacuate. I'll be watching from my (probably swaying) ivory tower with a huge pot of chili.

    Re: Hurricane Sandy

    Just got the phone call that the school district I work for is closed Monday and Tuesday (Union County, NJ). In the meantime, my boyfriend who is mall security in a mall that floods if two drops of rain fall, was told he still has to come to work on Tuesday. Not sure how they expect him to get there, as its extremely likely all the surrounding roads will be flooded out... again. -.-;

You realize people are going to still need gas AFTER the storm, right? Why not fill up before the storm? Actually, it's pretty smart.

Unless you want to be in one of those 2-3 hour lines to get gas after the fact.

People are in 2-3 hour lines before the storm when they won't even be allowed on the road after 4pm today. Gas stations are out of gas. People had days to prepare for this. People are stupid.

Get the fuck off the road, it's a state of emergency, emergency workers only. I'm not risking my life to save stupid fucks.

I can't wait till winds hit 50mph. Oh, you're having a heart attack? Oh you're on the barrier island that had mandatory evacuations? Sucks for you, we're not coming out. Car accident? Guess you're walking.

    ????

It's not really the same. Areas in the North East aren't used to flooding nor are weaker trees culled out from being in frequent high winds.

Northern Jersey gets massive flooding. Cat1 storms typically guarantee around $1billion minimum in damage. Due to our power grids, locations, amount of workers, its very common for people to be without power for 1-2weeks during storms like this.

Also, if you somehow didn't notice, the hurricane isn't what everyone is most panicked about. It's the fact that its strengthening before it hits as well as will be combining with another storm. It's being compared to the "perfect storm" of 1991. George Clooney died in that storm, we don't want to lose him again. They're saying this one should be worse than the storm of 91.

MTA isn't expected to be back up until at least tomorrow afternoon/evening. It sucks since I was scheduled to work from home anyways. Hopefully too many people end up using all of our Citrix licenses so I don't have to do anything..

Yeah, but it's like when us Minnesotans laugh at everyone south of us when everything goes to shit after an inch of snowfall. We do it because we've had to put up with that stupid shit for so long, and now someone else has to put up with just a tiny bit of what we get, and they're hopelessly inept. It makes us feel like we're good at something. Floridans get to feel good about hurricane preparedness. West coast gets earthquakes and the southwest gets tornadoes. East Coasters get to feel good about... living in really big cities?

Everyone understands that the other regions haven't had practice in preparing, but it's still fun to laugh. I find snow particularly amusing, because it doesn't kill too many people, and it's fucking hilarious watching you southerners try to drive in it. "Oh no, my tires are slipping, better SLAM ON THE BRAKES"

east has snow storms dude. short of a blizzard that drops 2+feet of snow and takes out large areas of power we dont even close the LIRR/MTA. lol 3 feet of snow we would stay up and running if not for winds that normally come with it. I went to the damn movies 2 years back with 3~4 inches of ice on the ground.
