Ok just to comment on this because either way, its epic news. I can't see this being a bad thing. Lucas no longer has direct control over SW. Can't be worse than what he's made it into.

Mark Hamil doesn't hate Star Wars as much, but he's old looking as shit now lol.
It wasn't seamless, but Disney could do with SW like they did with Tron Legacy ala Clu and Jeff Bridges. This way the aging of Hamil, Ford etc wouldn't be a big deal.

So is it known why Lucas actually sold Lucasfilms?
    He just decide to retire?
Maybe he believes the world is going to end Dec 21 and decided to live the rest of his days with a trillion dollars.

Disney is buying Lucasfilm, the company behind the Star Wars films, from its chairman and founder George Lucas for $4.05bn (£2.5bn).

Mr Lucas said: "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of film-makers."

In a statement announcing the purchase, Disney said it planned to release a new Star Wars film, episode seven, in 2015.

That will be followed by episodes eight and nine and then one new movie every two or three years, the company said.

The last Star Wars film was 2005's Revenge of the Sith, and Disney said it believed there was "substantial pent-up demand".

Disney will pay about half in cash and half in stock, issuing 40 million Disney shares in the transaction.

The deal follows Disney's acquisitions of Pixar studios for $7.4bn in 2006 and Marvel comics for $4.2bn in 2009.

"Our valuation of Lucasfilm is roughly comparable to the value we placed on Marvel when we announced that acquisition in 2009," Disney said, adding that the valuation was almost entirely driven by the Star Wars franchise.

George Lucas launched Lucasfilm in 1971 and the first Star Wars film was released in 1977.

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," Mr Lucas said.

"I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime."

Mr Lucas will continue as a creative consultant.

Kathleen Kennedy, currently co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become president of the firm and will be the executive producer on the new Star Wars films.

When the later Star Wars films were released in the 1990s and 2000s, although they did well at the box office, they were generally not well-received by fans.

But Josh Dickey, film editor at Variety magazine in LA, said that Disney was a "great fit" to update Star Wars.

"They're so good at branding and brands. They're so good at working with existing intellectual property and making it resonate with fans and marketing it very well," he told BBC World Service radio.

"They're not as good at creating original content, except for their Pixar division.

"I think if you bring together the minds from Pixar [and] the minds from Disney, the news that Disney is going to reboot Star Wars was a lot more exciting to fans than just 'there's gonna be another Star Wars'."

Lucasfilm is also the production company behind the Indiana Jones franchise, and fantasy films Willow and Labyrinth.

Michael Corty, analyst at Morning Star, said Disney's deal was clearly part of a pattern in buying new franchises.

"Pixar was the first big one, then Marvel, and now this one here," he said.

"Because Lucas is private, I would assume most investors would be surprised."

Not sure if want. I'd rather they just leave them alone and not do any movies, but if they're going to do them, they should stick to the established EU lore... or make something new that doesn't contradict any of it. Lucasfilm has been pretty good about that so far, making sure authors don't overwrite each other. Problem is, the ~50 years before and after the movies are all fairly written out, as far as the movie characters go.

I hear this includes ILM and Skywalker Sound. Anyone can verify? If so, Disney just made the best deal ever for themselves. Iger is just shitting all over Eisner atm. Makes me smile.

Then ya, for sure whether people are happy or not this was a really really fucking good move on Disney's part. ILM and SS have their hand in about 90% of the movies that are made in some way or another.

ILM and SS in the hands of Disney is.. wow. Talk about a huge profit increase.
Could be a lot of potential here as far as SW stuff goes.

Imagine if Michael Bay were to direct the next Star Wars. He'd be all like, well I really fucking like explosions, but since all my other movies haven't been nearly as large in scope as Star Wars I gotta blow up something really big, like really big, like an entire fucking planet.

Forgive me if I've missed it, but did this deal involve LucasArts as well? My god do some old games need to be rebooted. New X-Wing/Tie Fighter could revive the entire flight sim genre. Or their quirky, original adventure games.

Does this also mean Disney is getting all of the Droid royalties? Been noticing their credit in the fine print of the smart phone commercials for the last 5 years at least now. Can imagine that was great money for Lucas.

I'm all for Ep7+ being original and not within the confines of EU as long as the scripts are sound, interesting, and not over the heads of an untalented, self-removed cast.

    Example:
    Spoiler: show

Anyway, if not a complete farce, Hamill, Fisher, and Ford would be gravy. Getting any to return besides Hamill, even in a minor capacity, is asking a lot. Also, barring makeup, the jump in the timeline would have to be significant to compensate the age difference. Their kids would have to be in their 30s.

The Thrawn trilogy is the best option here from currently written material. However the video linked, with Lucas and the chick he turned Lucasfilm over to, say they are interviewing writers now. And I agree that they can't just cast new actors in old roles, so we are probably going to see whole new story lines. With Lucas looking on, they probably won't completely destroy the canon of the universe, but some books are gonna get turned sideways.

Still don't understand why some people are upset about this. Lucas has done nothing but shit all over anything he touches for the last 20 years. After Disney made Avengers, I've got nothing but faith in them. At the very least this means theres a 90% chance of seeing the original uncut trilogy come out on Bluray. It'll make money, and thats all Disney wants.

Han Solo recast. Probably the only person I could possibly accept.

Honestly though I pray they don't recast the original characters. Either pay out billions to get them to do another trilogy, or just set it farther in the future with new characters.

Absolutely not. I do not need a valid reason to waste more money on this shit. ):<
