    Bingo.

We don't need to see tired old actors reprising roles just for the sake of satisfying a thirst for nostalgia or 'reimagined' younger actors reprising the same roles. The OT is what it is, please just leave it be. The last thing we need is more needlessly thrown references to the familiar when so many other forms of media have done this already.

The Star Wars universe is vast and ripe for new stories to be told and that is where the magic of what made SW great can be rekindled. I want new characters, new stories and new insights already.

The writers have a roadmap regarding what worked in the OT and what failed in the prequels and from that knowledge they should be able to cook up a story that's interesting enough to breathe new life into the series.

After a hefty amount of speculation on what inspirations Disney and Lucasfilm would use for the plot of Star Wars: Episode VII, the latest reports claim the new movie won’t be based on any existing source material. Forget Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy , the video games and the graphic novels. The next Star Wars is a brand new story.

EOnline is reporting from a source inside Lucasfilm that Episode VII is an original story that we’ve never seen before. Does “original story” mean all new characters, set in the same universe? Or does it just mean a new version of what happens to the characters we know? Also, it appears as though the treatment that Disney purchased for the new trilogy was written by none other than George Lucas himself — as his last act before stepping away from the series.

The unnamed sources are also debunking rumors that various directors are attached to the picture — nobody has been signed up to direct just yet.

What's the point of calling it episode 7 if its an all new story?

The only problem is that unless you use or stomp on the EU stuff, you have to go ~50 years before/after the movies in order to hit fresh timeline. And even then, you can't go too far, because ~150 years after the movies is filled in too.

I really don't want to see them stomp all over the EU stuff, and some of the EU stuff is... not very good... so they'd have to be careful about using it. They can come up with entirely new stuff and fit it into the universe easily, but then there's nothing to tie it back to the movies. Personally, I'd be fine with that, but I can see less serious fans, like my friends, watching it and going "what the fuck is this? why is it called star wars 7?" and then saying it sucked because it had nothing to do with the first 6. If they approached the title differently, similar to "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron" I think it would go smoother.

I guess I'm just nitpicking the title at the point, lol.

This shit is going to be seen by a half a billion people minimum. The idea that they may be violating post-jedi storylines wont even cross their minds. I mean, fuck, i was born in 1980, grew up with star wars, played multiple video games in the universe, and I have absolutely no idea whatsoever what has supposedly occurred in the lore after Jedi.

How much has been done with the time period between Ep 3 and Ep 4, aside from the Force Unleashed games?

Could do some stuff there, I think... has it ever been said if Yoda/Obi-Wan ever made another attempt at taking on Vader or Palpatine?

Yoda fled to Dagobah and presumably never left, Obi-Wan went to Tatooine to look after Luke, so while no it's never been said "They never took on the Empire", it's commonly believed that they did not.

No Thrawn trilogy isn't surprising, would have had to have been done 10-15 years ago for the actors to even be halfway believable (age-wise). Now Lucas did write a treatment, but there's a lot that happens before we sit down in the theater (and we know we all will) and watch it. The biggest plus for me is that he's not directing it, that alone has a huge chance of it not being unwatchable like Episode 1 was.

    They're included.

Well Yoda did have his run in with a dark Jedi on Dagobah that is referred to in the Thrawn trilogy during that time. As for Obi-Wan he mostly stayed on Tatooine but did have some adventures. They just announced a book is coming out dealing with exactly that. But before Revenge of the Sith came out the time period between 3 and 4 was mostly empty. It's been filled quite a bit since then however.

Obi-wan did, shortly after he learned Vader was still alive. I haven't read that particular story, but I've heard about it.

The ideas behind the prequel trilogy weren't bad, but final script and the directing were freaking awful. Someone explained to me what Anakin's motivations where supposed to be in Ep III, and they made sense, but said motivations weren't on display in the movie I watched.

I'm fine with Lucas writing for things, but Lucas writing solo AND directing is a recipe for turd sandwich.

As details continue to flood in regarding the just-announced Star Wars: Episode VII, EW managed to catch up with Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, who reveals that he was made aware of plans for a third trilogy last August.

"[George Lucas] asked Carrie [Fisher] and I to have lunch with him and we did," Hamill says, "I thought he was going to talk about either his retirement or the 'Star Wars' TV series that I’ve heard about — which I don’t think we were going to be involved in anyway, because that takes place between the prequels and the ones we were in and, if Luke were in them, he’d be anywhere from a toddler to a teenager so they’d get an age-appropriate actor — or the 3-D releases. So when he said, 'We decided we’re going to do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX,” I was just gobsmacked. “What? Are you nuts?!” [Laughs]"

Although Hamill learned of the plans for more films, he was as surprised as anyone at the announcement of Lucasfilm being bought by Disney when he read about it online yesterday. He also doesn't know what involvement - if any - he'll have in future Star Wars films, but he remains optimistic as a fan.

"I can see both sides of it," he says. "Because in a way, there was a beginning, a middle, and an end and we all lived happily ever after and that’s the way it should be — and it’s great that people have fond memories, if they do have fond memories. But on the other hand, there’s this ravenous desire on the part of the true believers to have more and more and more material. It’s one of those things: people either just don’t care for it or are passionate about it. I guess that defines what cult movies are all about."

Hamill reiterates that Kathleen Kennedy will be handling a lot of the work on the new films, leaving Lucas to his newfound retirement and plans for a charitable educational foundation funded by the multi-billion dollar sale.
Kinda find it funny he only talked to Hamill and Fisher, although as people said earlier Ford wants nothing to do with the series. If he talked to them though I would expect them to appear in the movie, even if they're just cameo appearances. Just saw a recent picture of Hamill, no denying he looks like he'd make a good emperor now.
