Leviticus is a bronze age categorization system.

The translators took 3 different words and used abomination for all 3. Any way you put it, the general meaning is that it is unclean or goes against the normally accepted behaviors of a society. This is to protect against sickness and persecution. Basically; "Don't do it because you could get sick or your neighbor will see you doing it and not approve".

There doesn't seem to be much weight behind any argument I have ever heard against LGBT issues. They quote Leviticus as a talking point without knowing anything else about the laws of the land they are quoting.

The problem seems to be that they didn't have any categories between "okay" and "abomination."

There's probably not a lot of room for nuance 5-6 thousand years ago. I find it plausible that life as a whole was "okay or abomination/death", without much room for "born this way" or "cook pork to 145F" or "diarrhea for a couple days then you'll be ok"

That was a very awkward circle jerk of an interview, Stewart didn't even question "so what do your superiors think of your take on this?" Dude was just given a stage to spout a bunch of nonsense shading jesus as "maybe gay" unchallenged. It was lazy.

Would be lulz if they granted the rest of Leviticus as much weight as the anti-gay content. Flipping out anytime anyone calls bats mammals (they're birds!), hating those abhorent eagles, never cutting their hair or shaving, exiling couples who have sex on the woman's period, killing men who cheat on their wives... and killing the wives as well, killing all teenagers (what teenager doesn't "curse" his/her parents at some point?),...

apparently a decent chunk of it is devoted to specifying how/when to sacrifice various animals, too. my mom went through and read it, and I'm pretty sure it was leviticus that described ripping open the rib cage and spreading the wings just so, etc.

This past Monday, when speaking at Princeton University, Justice Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court made a grotesque and astonishing statement. In response to a student’s question about his unyielding support of laws that would ban consensual sexual relations between gay people, even in the privacy of their own homes, Justice Scalia responded, “If we cannot have moral feelings against homosexuality, can we have it against murder?”

That a sitting U.S. Justice could draw any kind of parallel between an act of love and tenderness on the one hand and an act of ultimate violence and evil on the other is more than disheartening; it sends a message to LGBT people everywhere that a member of our highest court cannot see us as anything but criminals, simply because of who we are and who we love. How can any gay couple coming before this court seeking equal treatment under the law have any realistic hope that Justice Scalia will fairly apply the rule of law and the principles of our Constitution, when all he sees before him are persons who should be locked up?

Seventy years ago, the Supreme Court upheld President Roosevelt’s incarceration of 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry–two thirds of whom were U.S. Citizens–simply because we looked like the people who bombed Pearl Harbor. I was among those citizens. As I stated in a recent interview with Thomas Roberts on MSNBC (see the clip here), Justice Scalia today continues to espouse a similar prejudicial and offensive bias that is repugnant to the very principle of equal treatment and due process.

Justice Scalia had the unprofessional gall to make his preconceptions and animus toward LGBT persons public and crystal clear a mere few days after the Court agreed to review the cases. As he well knows, judges must avoid not only bias in their decisions, but the appearance of bias in their decision making, lest the judiciary fall even further into discredit in the eyes of the public. Now Justice Scalia should do the right thing and admit he cannot rule in this case fairly and impartially, and he should recuse from the cases. Should he fail to do so (and I have little expectation that he will), I hope and trust the fair-minded members of the Court will consider his poisonous preconceptions as unworthy of support–and toss them unceremoniously to the dungheap of history where they belong.

How could someone be so biased and make it to the supreme court justice?

If Scalia decides to excuse himself for this case, or to just retire altogether,
I would fully support his decision, though neither is likely to happen.

Honestly, if we cannot have moral feelings against Scalia, can we have it against anything?

What worries me is that he's pushing 80 but looks like he's in his 50's. We could well have another 20 years of the idiot assuming he doesn't have a history of heart disease or cancer in his family.
