Phil Simms says Eli Manning is not an elite quarterback

The New York Giants are in a slump and that is bringing out critics from all corners.

Including former Giants quarterback Phil Simms, who says that Eli Manning is not an elite quarterback.

Yes, Simms is critiquing Manning, who has two Super Bowl titles to Simms’ one as a starter. Manning has been named Super Bowl MVP twice to Simms’ one. Soon, Manning will pass Simms in the Giants’ record books.

“No, he is not one of the elites,” Simms said on CBS Sports Network’s “NFL Monday QB,” according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Manning has not played well in New York’s recent slump and he has acknowledged that. He has thrown 12 touchdown passes vs. 11 interceptions this season.

“When I hear the word elite, I’m thinking about guys that can make unbelievable plays on the field by themselves," Simms said. "There are very few quarterbacks in that category. So yes, Eli has been a tremendous team player. He has been MVP of the Super Bowl twice. I know that. But the way I look at it, the answer is no.”

There were similar criticisms of Manning at this point a season ago. If he leads the Giants deep into the playoffs this year, we’ll see what is said about him then.

Roethlisberger officially OUT for Sunday night's matchup against the Ravens. Doctors are more concerned about his rib injury than anything, noting that playing on Sunday could lead to more internal damage. "More"? That sucks.

So now if the Steelers lose, the fans will have an excuse, and if they win, they won't shut up about it. Ever. Meh.

Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said Wednesday that Matt Cassel will start at quarterback against the Bengals Sunday, according to the KC Star's Adam Teicher. Crennel added that Brady Quinn has not been cleared by doctors for game action, despite Quinn's claim to the contrary Monday evening.
