It is clarified, though, that the Emperor gave the green-light for Nael to restart project Meteor because Nael made sure the Emperor didn't think Dalamud was anything more than a moon. His Radiance must be a little bit dense or Nael's persuasion skills must be top-notch if the Emperor could overlook the events of 10 years ago.
One thing they only hinted at that really piqued my interest was when Nael implied that Gaius' intent to conquer Eorzea was a personal vendetta, something Gaius did not outright deny.
From what I gathered throughout the story/website is that Nael is a very smarmy persuasive asshole. I could understand if the Emperor was swayed by his honeyed words (I mean, he was appointed Legatus after open-secretly killing his father & aides) or at least that's what I got from it. Gaius' personal vendetta I just attributed to the whole his invasion got fuckered by the "unexpected appearance of a primal" (Midgardsormr?) after conquering Ala Mhigo, but I'd like to be more than that '~'
(I think I read in those cutscenes? earlier that Bozja was 10 years ago, which is interesting because the Battle of Silvertear Falls was 10 years ago too)
As someone who hasn't really followed the development of these characters, Nael and Gaius seem to interact with each other as equals, yet they wear very different armor. What are their official ranks?
They are both "Imperial Legatus," so they are equals, both in charge of their own legion. Nael commands the VIIth Legion while Gaius commands the XIVth Legion.
Either their garb is to differentiate the different legion generals or just personal preference.
Aside from the fact that this is a fantasy game, it's common even in real world militaries that the higher ranks are given more freedom when it comes to personal preferences in attire.
The legatus (legatii?) are of the highest rank, they answer only to the emperor so they're kind of a big deal. Gaius is essentially the ruler on the Empire's behalf of all the Garlean territory in Eorzea.
I have been trying to catch up on the lore but unfortunately a lot of sites are blocked at work. I was able to watch the Cutscenes on Thaze's stream so I think I have a good grasp on it from those and the summaries here, but I have heard no mention of Midgardsormr (sp?) until Rocl posts. How does he/it play into the story? Is it shown in some side-quest?
e: Along with that, there was mention of someone named "Hildibrand" in the Live letter, from the conrtext it sound like he was a loved character but I have seen no mention of him in the main story. What is his/her deal?
Midgardsormr is the massive serpent that downs the Garlean juggernaught in the original introduction sequence. It went unnamed and unexplained for a long long time and now it's named... but still largely unexplained.
Hildebrand is a comic relief sidequest NPC. Pretty much imagine an XIV rendition of Inspector Gadget and Penny (minus the gadgets). That's pretty much him and his inexplicably sleepy Miqo'te sidekick. The cutscenes involved in his quests are extremely slapstick and the current climax of that story is pretty ridiculous. He's the sleazy Hyur Highlander with the black tux and monocle that you might see around in signatures and whatnot.
Midgardsormr is the snake-dragon that curls around the big ship (and crashes it) in the 1.0 opening movie.
Hildibrand is the goofy detective in the inn room quests.
Ok, was afraid I was going to have to jump down another rabbit hole to figure out more stuff.
I just re-watched the opening CS (thanks for the link). I had completely forgotten about the second half of it. Whenever I thought back to it I could only remember the Ochu fight and I just regarded it as some cool stuff that you could do and not story-relevant. All the sky battle and Primals being released stuff was completed whitewashed in my mind.
