    And boom goes the dynamite.

Not nearly as insanely metal as last year but anytime I can see Bad Religion and The Offspring on the same day is good with me. Also, AWOLNATION rock the shit live, I'd be lying if I said wasn't stoked for them too. I'm looking forward to most of the line-up, really.

Warning: kinda lj post (particularly the beginning), don't read if uninterested. Complaints about the subject will be void and earn you my unending contempt. (not really)

So, I've just catched the end of Metallica live @ Glastonbury on the BBC.
Caught Nothing Else Matters, Enter Sandman, their version of Whiskey in the Jar (well, their rendition of Thin Lizzy's version, really) and Seek'n'Destroy.

Metallica's one of those bands I used to listen a lot of as a teen, alongside Nirvana, The Offspring (shut up, when I was 12, Self Esteem was the shit; as was Come out and Play for that matter), Sepultura (Refuse! Resist!) and all that early 90s jazz.

Haven't listened to them in a long long time, though, between the tripe they've released lately and Lars being a complete dick, I was disgusted of them.
Tried to remind myself of their good old material by listening to Master and I just couldn't stand James' voice, nor really enjoy the tracks.

I wrote the 2 paragraphs above purely for context, back to the concert:
James' voice was even worse than usual, I still can't stand Robert and it was weird to see Kirk's hair & beard going white so suddenly but there was an undeniable kind of intensity to it all, and a powerful reminder that this band, before perfecting a delivery system for fecal matter to the aural passages (St Anger, Lulu), wrote some pretty damn good, powerful, effective riffs.
I... actually kinda wanted to be there, to let myself go and sing/scream along (sing Nothing Else Matters, scream Seek'n'Destroy); and this was just a TV concert!

Anyway, that gave me an idea: we should share concert stories!
Best you've been? Worst? Best surprise? Worst disappointment? Whateveryoucanthinkof?

Most surprising for me has to be Grave Digger. I'm not really into Power Metal (although I really was into Iced Earth for a while and Helloween/Gamma Ray are classics) - I'm more of a Death/Melodeath/Meloblack fan, so I'd only heard of this german Power Metal band prior.
I was going to the Graspop Metal Meeting (a belgian fest) for bands like Nile, Behemoth, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Dark Tranquillity, Samael and, most of all, Amon Amarth; but at that specific time slot, the choice was between Grave Digger on one scene and a couple of nu crap bands on the others, so I decided to check them out.

Let me tell you, as cheesy as it all is, when you're there you can't help but be immersed in the crowd, immerse in the atmosphere, immersed into the fantasy and join in chorus to the tune of "Excalibur, sword of the kings, take me on your wings, back where I belong, Excalibur!"
I didn't know the band's repertoire, but if you'd seen me there and then, you'd have thought I was a dedicated fan... and I wasn't an isolated case: everyone in that tiny marquee was having a blast.
Not the best concert of that fest (just look at the band list I listed earlier), but a very nice surprise. If you've got the chance to see them, go in there with an open mind, don't be afraid to look silly and you should enjoy yourselves as well.

Most disappointing was Samael. Same fest, same marquee, not sure if same day or not.
A swiss band that initially played Black Metal but transitionned to a more electronic sound with 1999's Eternal and 2004's Reign of Light.
Eternal is full of good ideas and mixes Black Metal and electronic music in interesting ways, Reign of Light is bland, monotonous and uninventive. (note: I bought Era One after Reign of Light - that was a massive disappointment as well, it's mostly silence! Nothing happens on that record!)
Anyway, back to the concert: Xy's a real beast, drumming while standing and jumping on his cymbals like a madman, Vorph has some sort of enthralling charisma and, at first, I expected the best. But that was short-lived.
For all of Xy's energy and Vorph's mystique, the band wasn't interacting with the crowd at all, they were just playing in a going-through-the-motions way, Vorph started throwing contemptuous glances towards random audience members who threw the horns or moved excessively to his tastes, as if he expected an artsy-fartsy crowd, not a horde of Metalheads.

The whole thing wasn't helped by them lifting almost all of their set from the then-recent Reign of Light. It was all quite flat.
I stayed to the end (the other stages must've had some very uninteresting bands), hoping it'd take off eventually, but no. There was no atmosphere at all.

And I'll stop here, more stories for another time maybe.
Not like anybody read past line 2 anyway

Faith no more was my favorite for personal reasons. Guitarist for the last album they released is my cousin, and his grandmother died a few months after we got to see them live at the Warfield. It really seemed like she hung around just long enough to see him make it before passing.

Second favorite was Metallica along with Jerry Cantrell and days of the new. Days sucked ass but Jerry was fucking awesome, alternating between his solo stuff and some Alice in chains. Metallica was also amazing.

I've got this hectic schedule today...

Only one real issue and that's Tech N9ne and Chevelle play at the same time... I'll be seeing Tech but damn.

Me thinks I'll be heavy in the beer garden between AWOLNATION and The Offspring, lol.
