As far as me and my friend as concerned, Ascians are Organization XIII. I can't unrelate them after that last few cutscenes.
Well...they do appear and vanish through dark portals and wear black style cloaks. welp
Now that I think about it, Thancred looks a lot like Roxas.
Well, "Ascians" means "Those without shadows" (usually just meant to mean "living near the equator", but whatever), so it follows a sort of nice Heartless->Bodyless->Shadowless theme, I guess. But since the Heartless are the ones without bodies and the Nobodies are the ones without hearts, I don't know what that implies the Ascians are actually missing, heh.
I know everyone's made the Lahabrea/Mateus connection already, but had anyone else realized that Lahabrea's face-glyph thing is literally pulled straight from Mateus' esper glyph and spear?

Spoiler: show
Makes me want to look back through the other esper glyphs to see if there's any connection between them and the Legacy tattoo or the Legacy chocobo's markings (since they seem to be of a very similar style). Are there other revealed Ascian glyphs in-game? Perhaps when Belias is summoned?

12 gods for the warriors of light
12 gods for the warriors of darkness (ascians)
Not really all that surprising. Due to that, I don't expect the legacy tattoo to match up with anything having to do with the Ivalice gods, since we're supposed to be the warriors of light and all that.
Yeah, for each main Ascian (since there appears to be several), there's an opposing elder primal (scion of light).
Based on that, it might be assumed that the Ascian encountered at the end of the SMN quest (Ascian of the Twelfth Staff) is possibly Loghrif despite not showing his glyph, or just a lesser Ascian under him, also connected to Belias. I'm just wondering if any other Ascians show their little face glyph throughout the cutscenes besides Lahabrea. Based on them, you could find their identity.
Zodiark being the elder primal they seek, I thought maybe our marks might represent Ophiuchus or something. (since Zodiark has no prexisting opposing scion of light and nor does Ultima) Perhaps Bahamut is his or Ultima's opposing scion of light?
Don't forget every Ascian we've seen with a face glyph has used the same one as Lahabrea.
I was actually wondering about the face gylph the other night and if it was Zodiark's esper gylph but it wasn't and i began to wonder if it wasn't supposed to be a representation of Zodarik himself '=';
I'm still wracking my brain trying to think of where they showed other Ascians with their face glyph other than Lahabrea without drudging through every MSQ youtube video.
Are they shown when the golem or voidsent are summoned during the pre-Waking Sands MSQs?
My current bullshit theory is that Hydaelyn itself is a shell around Zodiark, much like "Dalamud" was a prison for Bahamut, just much larger and much stronger... with lots of people living on it. Allagans & Ascians waged ancient war, blah blah, and imprisoned the Ascians' gods (elder primals). Somehow, the Allagans eventually went extinct and now the Ascians are trying to free their bros. One of their strategies involved encouraging the primitive beast tribes to summon their Primals, knowing we would keep killing them, slowly weakening Hydaelyn from the constant aether drain (and inciting all kinds of additional conflict here and there).
Perhaps Ultima was the Allagan's opposition to Zodiark... and Lahabrea orchestrated that to be fucked up by giving it to the Garleans, knowing it would be pitted against us, the few who could lay it low. Seemed like a largely intentional series of events with minor "oh shit they are quite strong huh" moments here and there (like Thancred's exorcism). The Ascians don't seem all that surprised or upset at the end of the MSQs. Like this was all intended to eventually get their Bahamut bro out of jail.
Yes. The golem/gargoyle summoning Masked Mage uses the face gylph.
As for your bullshit theory, there's a lot I don't like. The 'echo' cutscene of the dark crystal (is it Zodiark?) and the idea of a war between the Allag and Ascians. The Ascians, I feel, almost certainly come from beyond the Seventh Gate of Hell, or rather, Void itself.
I have other stuff to say but I'm about to do shit in game now so '='
Was that not Lahabrea?
Maybe each black-mask Ascian is under one of the primary 12 Ascians (named after the scions of light), sharing their elemental aspect with one primal elder (Mateus, for those under Lahabrea).
Are there other Ascian names similiar to "Ascian of the Twelfth Staff?" I can't recall... Maybe that makes Loghrif #12?
as far as i can recall, only that one Ascian is referred to anything other than Scion Name / Masked dude
