I think it's fair to assume that *something* happened to him in Castrum [I forget the name] when his aura changes, but there's an argument to be made that he was being "influenced" well before then (otherwise how could he just "force" Dalamud to give him strength like he does in the Castrum?).

Yeah so far we've only seen him at a distance in both post-T5 and in this latest teaser. Too many unknowns to jump to any conclusions other than:

    It's definitely Nael van Darnus.

I mean, he was always fucking crazy. Let us not forget he killed his father and all of his father's aides for political gain. Also it was Castrum Novum where he raised his spear aloft and spoke to Dalamud (which I believe was the first time we saw him do so) and then his eyes began to glow red. It wasn't really "forced" either. As I recall (and I'll prob google it later), he asks Dalamud to grant him some power to smite the realm or some malarkey.

It's the same kind of fanaticism we see from tempered beastmen though. He was never playing with a full deck but if he wasn't tempered before Castrum Novum I think he definitely was afterwards. His entire demeanor changes; he moves from reasonably competent tactician to full-blown lunatic in the blink of an eye.

We aren't really disagreeing, but post-Novum his behaviour is VERY different from the Tempered Beastmen. Well, at the very least it seems a lot more radical to me anyways.

Batshit insane -->: Killed his father/family/political rivals offscreen. Lied to the Emperor of his country in order to further his career and sold said doddering Emperor on the idea of blowing up a whole continent instead of conquering it. It sounded like Darnus was the only real proponent of Meteor too, because as you recall Meteor literally killed an entire city of Imperial citizens/scientists/et al. when they did something slightly awry.

Fucked with the wrong shit --->: Allowed something to happen between him and Dalamud in Novum.

Totally detached from reality --->: "Not can be save purity." now this guy wants to destroy everything

Referring the lore about the Archons from before, I found an interesting little tidbit from the 1.0 storyline: In the "Of Archons and Muses" quest from 1.0 which talks about the archon Ahldbhar.

    Which states:

"Tyago Moui: They say Ahldbhar was the mightiest of the twelve Archons. Rhalgr the Destroyer himself, taken form in Roegadyn flesh─a bloody mountain of a man, and a fearsome warrior, besides. Not unlike our friend at the Coliseum, eh?

Tyago Moui: You must've seen renderings of Rhalgr at some point─in paint or stone. Looks like a bag of angry muscles in a mage's robes, right? Aye, well, those are done in the likeness of Archon Ahldbhar.

Tyago Moui: Ahldbhar fought relentlessly against a clan of wicked sorcerers that sought only to wreak havoc on the world through their dark powers. But then, something happened... Something that threw Ahldbhar into deep despair. And in the end, he turned and took up with the enemy, though none can say as to why."

    *Spoilers*
I think these "wicked sorcerers" were the Ascians, and Ahldbhar was/is possessed by one, similar to how Thancred was.
Supposedly, something happened that affected Ahldhar, that caused him to succumb to the Ascians' influence, just like what happened to Thancred after the encounter with Ifrit. Maybe we'll see what happened to Ahldhar in the future? An upcoming plot point perhaps?

It's officially patchweek and given that I hope to have more to discuss come this weekend I figure I'll give a brief recap of why you should be excited for 2.2. This post will contain 1.0, 2.0, and 2.1 spoilers. Fuck the police it's been long enough!

Sahagin & Leviathan or "How 2.1+ continues to tie up 1.0 threads":

We weren't properly introduced to the Sahagin before 2.0 and even then we've only seen them sparingly. We've often had to deal with their tempered subjects, the Serpent Reavers, who seem to possess somewhat more wits about them than Ifrit's Branded.

It was something like 7-8 years (in 1.0) since the Sahagin had been in/around Lominsa waters/coasts, so their recent return to the shores to spawn is big news.

Like the Amalj'aa before them we haven't particularly met any non-aggressive Sahagin and certainly no untempered Sahagin before the upcoming Novv Nursery dailies.

The enigmatic Sahagin are particularly interesting because they are the only beastmen we knew of to work with the Ascians before the revelation in 2.0 that Paragon = Ascian. Travanchet, whom we met in Limsa Lominsa's story in 1.0, led the Sahagin fleet in an attack against the Knights of the Barracuda and was keenly interested in finding a key Emerick pilfered from Seal Rock or Swallowtail Roam (I can never remember which is which). During the story, Travanchet eventually gets the key but not before intervention of a sea serpent (twice) and many machinations with Sahagins and Serpent Reavers. [Fun Fact: Thalaos is more than likely NOT the Sea Serpent we see in 1.0 as there were two skeletons in Cassiopeia Hollow in 1.0 which bore the names Thalaos and Perykos)

Rewatching 1.0 cutscenes has Y'shtola refer to Ascians right before the grand naval battle between Sahagin and Barracuda as "shadoweaters." (I've always wondered why the Sahagin needed boats...) Another interesting tidbit is the preview of cannonballs stop just short of Leviathan apparently hitting an invisible forcefield also happens in the same 1.0 naval battle. With the Barracuda Knight's cannonballs being likewise repelled by the Serpent Reaver ships.

As always I am amazed at how much I overlooked in 1.0 cutscenes. They make it super obvious Travanchet is without shadow, yet we didn't fully realize this before Fernewhales made it abundantly clear on a post on the OF much later. They pan out to show us the sun at high noon and the Elezen walks from the shadow of the sail to the light of the deck and the camera even zooms in on his foot w/o a shadow. (Also the musical cue, the 'Ascian' theme plays, which only plays during cutscenes with him and the Ascian alter in the original 1.0 quest)

More screentime with Y'shtola is always nice as next to Louisoix and Urianger she has always come across as one of the more knowledgeable Circle of Knowing members. In addition she has some semblance of control over OUR Echo, at the very least she does in 1.0-- being able to push out of an Echo dream or into one. In addition she's able to travel into the past with us in 1.0 as well (we appear to be able to drag her with us).

Extremes actually have some semblance of a story:

Since we'll be getting Thornmarch (Extreme) and Whorleater (Extreme) we'll probably seen the Ascians of Twelfth Sword and Chalice again.
"How much longer can you stem the tide of Darkness, Bringer of Light? How well will you fare against the next god to reawaken? Hm hm hm..."
Reminder that the focuses for summoning extreme primals requires a bone of a devout follower. Rest in peace Mogglesguard.
What does the Ascian mean "reawaken" and Ifrit (Extreme) being his "rebirth"?

Kobolds were never the bad guys

The Kobolds and settlers of Limsa Lominsa made a pact of peace. The Kobolds, as far as I can recall, never really broke the pact until the Lominsans responded with violence. Even so, they never took 'the bounty from beneath the sea' as the Lominsans have taken 'the bounty of the earth' which was given to the Kobolds in their treaty.

I always found a somewhat forgivable excuse for the Kobold's summoning of Titan. They don't have the power the Lominsans have and feel threatened by the oathbreakers. (Their fault for trusting pirates in a war zone, I guess) The untempered Kobolds I think will provide a lot of insight into the pact/oath as a whole. Especially since it's been mentioned before that Kobolds are master smiths and metallurgists; not to mention they have some way to create synthetic voidsent and soulkin.

    One Night in Amdapor:

Amdapor has always been one of the most interesting retcons in 2.0. The Amdapori lived in the Twelveswood, were masters of white magicks and other magic which could alter the fabric of reality. Given this knowledge we can assume they had made pacts with voidsent as the Lambs of Dalamud have so it makes sense that the Cult takes up residence in the Keep, probably led there by the lingering effects of the Void. The elementals of the Shroud had hidden all remnants of the Amdapori (which is the explanation of their absence in 1.0), yet the elementals have been severely weakened/nearly wiped out after the falling of Dalamud and scarring of the Twelveswood. It's upsetting not a lot of lore is typically packed into random 4-man dungeons, but with the arrival of Diabolos we're beginning to understand why the elementals kept the Amdaporis hidden '='; After all he is referenced as the "agent of Amdapor's destruction"....

We'll probably get some explanation regarding the Elementals as well since the quest begins at E-Sumi-Yan, which is always nice since they're usually mentioned in passing/mourning in 2.0 and only show up briefly during the Conjurer quests.

Hard mode? More like snore mode

Not much to say with these other than Halatali appears to be opened up for Gladiatorial matches which is kind of cool and that the Illuminati were the Goblins who kept the art of materia assimilating/melding secret. I'm kind of surprised they've come for Brayflox and not for Mutamix, but I suppose we'll see what happens with them. More goblins is always excellent though, because they're relatively underrepresented (actually most beastmen are)... Could it be that the Illuminati were behind Aiatar as well ?

The Binding Coil of Hype and Return to 1.0 Villains

I can't read that Japanese, someone else should translate it though.

Coincidence? I think not! Heart of Sabik more like HEART OF ZODIARK. After all, we hear a heartbeat, see Zodiark, then Bahamut roars at the end of The Ultimate Weapon... it has to be connected right!? Then the camera pans over the husk of Dalamud north of the Singing Shards...

Given the concept art above and what we know.... I expect Turn 9 to be Nael van Darnus and us to see the partially regenerated Bahamut. The question remains where he got Bradamante though if Gilgamesh is supposed to have it. If you didn't already know there's a FATE which pops outside of the Fallgourd Float Coil entrance which spawns Lunar Golems which were adds during the Nael van Darnus fight in 1.0, in addition there's some obvious Lunar Golems shown in the Coil preview. I wonder if the Rafflesia is some form of Dark Matter monster (the Chimera appears to be) or if we're seeing some sort of Allagan experimentation on fauna? (Or flora, I guess.)

    Gilgamesh
    'Nuff said.
If that isn't enough, we'll probably get the revelation that Godbert (the guy who gives you the Meteor Survivor Ring from the quests at Bronze Lake) is Hildibrand's father. As I recall Godbert mentioned losing his son in the Calamity and Hildibrand was thought dead so...

EDIT: My internet is shoddy so I'll be adding to the post later, but wanted to save it somewhere.

    EDIT2: I think I'm done.

Of Course it is! Sabik is also known as η Ophiuci, one of the stars in the Ophiucus (Serpentarius, aka the 13th astrological sign, which is Zodiark in FFT/FF12) constellation.

    Spoiler: show
What's pretty cool is the whole thematic approach in Coil: so many serpents, and they're all related to Ophiucus (also known as Asclepius, the Serpent Bearer wielding the Caduceus and father of the Hygieia, who used Medusa's blood for raising the dead - I wouldn't be too surprised if the "Gift and Knowledge of Eternity" from the 2.2 trailer was related to Zodiark at this point).

They had synthetic bombs in 1.0 and I was fairly certain bombs qualified as voidsent. Also @coblyn debate there's actually a lot of contradictions regarding coblyns in game referring to them as both soulkin and vilekin

Additionally the Kobolds had the ability to summon/control golems in 1.0

i fucking love you btw, i had previously noticed all the snakes and linked it very loosely with zodiark/serpentarius but having all the rl lore to hang it on makes it so much more badass

I'm no expert, but it says something more or less to the effect of "Prostrate yourselves, and despair." I believe.

I can see why they went with the translation that they did then, "Please look forward to it" is much more PR-friendly.

The definition of "voidsent' seems a bit fuzzy.

Stuff like bombs and golems are inanimate objects brought to life (in XI they were arcana).

"Voidsent" has an obvious otherworldly quality to it and would seem appropriate for "unnatural" things not meant to exist in this dimension (dark dragons, demons, imps, ahriman, gargouille, mindlfayers?).

Never played 1.0. Was there something in game that might be the source to this?

Sourced from the game, perhaps. There is (was) a thread in the Lore forum and Anonymoose gave an explanation of it. Which I managed to find, even with this shitty phone.

Attempting to Raimdelle and classifying all of Eorzea's fauna in order is something best left for another forum, another thread, another wiki. I think it's safe to say the Kobold's alchemy is pretty advanced to be able to create bombs and golems or whatever though.
