I find it strange that the settlements aren't attacked more/instead as well. But you have to remember, the Gaza Strip is a whopping 5 miles across, bordered the long way by Israel. They can have helicopters and warplanes anywhere in the strip in a matter of minutes if shit gets out of hand.

West Bank isn't controlled by Hamas, they're controlled by the Palestinian Authority, and they're a bit less...terrorist-y over there.

It is funny/ridiculous/sad that the West Bank, who hasn't rocket-attacked Israel ever as far as I can tell, is getting equally punished with additional settlements/tax revenue withheld when Hamas was doing all the fighting down in the gaza strip.

Basically, you're fucked if you take them on militarily, and you're fucked if you attempt to take them on diplomatically.

Israel doesn't want a solution, they want to antagonize Palestinians to violence regularly enough to keep stealing their land.

The best part is that Israel seems more willing to have negotiations with Hamas than the PA.

It's all part of the plan.

I know. I'm just saying if I was in West Bank, I would flip my shit if Israel was doing these things to me.

The religious zealots or ultra nationalistic people usually are prime material. They're more prone towards expanding to the edge of the fence so that Israel has to take even more land for "security" purposes. They're also more likely to attack, threaten,be racist to or generally antagonize Palestinians so that there's a chance one of them gets fed up for half a second and Israeli soldiers must "defend" the people from those brutal Palestinian savages.

I am not saying it is equivalent to settlements. I am just saying it was provocative, and they knew there would be a response.
This line of reasoning is completely invalid in relation to political maneuvering. Launching rockets and shit is one thing, you can't go with "they're asking for it" by seeking international support of their arguments peacefully.

    What the fuck. No.

Any step that solidifies international support for the PA is a big deal. It's Israel + US + US's bitches vs whoever they can find. "Whoever they can find" just officially became most of the UN.

Effectively shutting down the PA's ability to function and costing thousands of jobs, now that's an "empty gesture" if I've ever seen one...

Better economic conditions, Jordan doesn't let them import arms, most distinct Palestinian governmental control, traditional holy sites, etc. There are lots of factors.

As for punishing the West Bank, I am sure that Israel would love to split the West Bank from Gaza. Punishing the West Bank for actions taken on Gaza is probably a means to move in that direction. The situation between the West Bank and Gaza is kind of like a fight between a husband and wife. They will fight about anything, but as soon as someone external comes in to judge, they will circle the wagons and defend each other. So, punishing the West Bank for Gaza's actions are pretty counter-productive.

The PA didn't really get any more support. They just got a vote. The overall support did not change. It accomplishes nothing for the PA in any substantive way. But it is an action that Israel has stated would have consequences. You can say that Israel "shouldn't" punish them, but this is about international relations, kids. There is no running to mommy and saying that Israel is being unfair.

The PA made a political move that keeps their victim status, and to Israel, it proves they aren't interested in peace. Israel punishes them, the PA gets to whine about it, and the actual Palestinian people suffer more. No one gives a fuck about the Palestinians, certainly not Israel, but not the PA either.

    Residue.

Anyway, recent events seem to show that Israel's issue is not with violent forms of resistance, but it seems to want no resistance at all.
