You'll need a long case if you buy a 680. That card is like 12.5" and the first case I bought wasn't long enough for it so had to upgrade it. If you go cooler master, storm scout is too small. Get a HAF model mid-tower and it'll fit fine with plenty of extra space and cooling capability.

There are also some models around which can be overclocked to 100+ hz, if you're interested in that.

This might seem contrary to what you've been thinking, but have you considered getting a gaming laptop instead? You can get some very impressive laptops that are well beneath you budget cap, and the portability that a laptop adds is undervalued.

Oh yeah, if I was going to buy a 27-30" IPS I'd probably chance it on one of the Korean IPS. 23" - 24" I'd probably stick with Dell as I'm still wary of the foreigners. I'm just saying I have no experience with them to validate how good or bad they are. And while GTG response times are great, there are a lot of other factors that give true response time in which the difference between 6 or 8 ms GTG response is a pretty shitty representation of the actual response. Either way, response time is almost a moot point because only those super hardcore gamer elites are going to notice the difference. I didn't notice any difference with my 2 ms Samsung side by side with my 8 ms Dell and I still can't on anything I play. Also, I'm sure the overclocking thing is probably pretty sick, but I doubt Abandon wants to do anything like that.

I've got a decent laptop now, but i've wanted a desktop for a while now, and especially since i just picked up rank (today actually, lol), I've got the money to spend on one without too much worry about denting my bank account.

My base recommendation. CyberPower PC is a pretty fucking fantastic builder. If you want proof of that, just look at all of the accolades on their front page.

If I weren't at work, I would recommend specific upgrades to that base unit. Someone else may in the interim.

They're offering free engraving on that shit right now, though. Make that shit fancy motherfucker. Get some cool lights, the quiet fans, the insulation—you'll have a slick-ass beast.

However, that is only a computer. That, and I didn't invest a lot of time in comparing reviews for the different graphics cards, and so on.

From that build, you could lop off a few hundred by:

1. Changing the case to something less expensive, and without water cooling.
2. Remove all of the sound insulation options.
3. Choose the Intel quad-core i7 instead of the six-core i7. (This alone will cut it down by over $300.)

If anyone else wants to come in and change some particulars, by all means.

Are you into making a pick from CyberPowerPC, Abandon? This seems to be the best middle-ground between not having to build yourself and not buying a mass-produced pre-built with subpar parts that you won't in all likelihood be able to do much with once the hardware's aged in however many years.

If that looks like something you want to do, why don't we start out by finding a case you like and then the rest of us can fill in the gaps. If it's primarily for gaming and you aren't intending to do a lot of video editing, then I'd think an Intel i5-3570k paired with an AMD 7800/7900 series card would do really well and float you at around $1300-1500.

The Corsair 300R, 400R and NZXT H2 in black all look like really slick cases to me. You can click around on the first category in Kohan's link to see what your options are.

Just chiming in to +1 cyberpowerpc. If you don't want to build it yourself, and don't mind spending a little extra for that, they're pretty good, and allow you all the advantages of picking your own parts. I bought my last pc from them, and have no complaints. One of my video cards was DoA, but they were quick to replace it.

As said above you could easily lop about $900 off that and get a faster gaming PC off the site with Z77/i5, no need for X79 if you only use a single GPU on it (unless you need the hex core)
