Disabling Anti Aliasing in Catalyst Control Center

Is there anyway to disable AA in CCC for certain programs, the way you can in the nvidia control panel? the only options i see are 'use application settings' 'enhance application settings' and 'override application settings', nothing that force-disables it, and the minimum level is 2x. i'm new to CCC so i might be missing something.

i've been having some problems with the game lately, and i've discovered that in the nvidia control panel, setting all AA to 'off' alleviates some of it. i'm test driving a radeon card, and i'm encountering a lot of the same problems, but i can't seem to find a way to disable AA.

Is there no way to disable it within the game? Seems a bit weird that it wouldn't have the option to disable it, even if it's via an ini file. I only see that CCC able to add AA and not forcibly remove it as well.

    What game is it?

final fantasy xi. see that's the strange part; as far as i'm aware AA is not compatible with ffxi and should have no effect on it whatsoever. so i have no idea why disabling it in nvidia control panel made any difference but for some reason it does. i can't find a similar option in CCC.

i'm hoping to get CCC working, because my nvidia card is a geforce 670, and i'm suffering from the same problem a lot of 600 series owners are having, where playing with shadows/weather on causes crashes. problem doesn't happen with radeon, so i'm basically having to choose one problem or the other at the moment... can't fix both blah!

Use ATI Tray Tools, if you don't already.

that a third party program? i was hoping to avoid those. but that will force-disable AA like the nvidia control panel can?

wow this is a pain. i downloaded ATT, then got some error message, i googled the error message, and now i have download an older version of an AMD driver, then download another program called 7-zip, use it to extract a file from that older driver so i can copy a file from it into the ATT folder... what a friggin' pain, this had better be worth it.

ok i followed instructions exactly as written in the forums, and now my computer freezes upon reaching desktop *sigh* and this is exactly why i wanted to avoid using 3rd party programs. ok back to the ole 670 i go. guess i won't be playing ffxi on that computer until they fix the crash issue.

You may want to keep in mind that what helps an nvidia card may not help an ati card. They do go about things differently, as ati cards never had the same kinds of issues as nvidia ones with this game in the past at least (nv's 8000 series rings a bell).

Just know that shadows and heightened background settings in this game can really kill performance in crowded places. That's just a given you have to live with. Overclocking your CPU helps a lot for this though, and of course using lesser settings (background res match window res instead of double; disable shadows). I can see in upwards of 10fps increase when in a super crowded spot in lower jeuno on my laptop by pushing its cpu.

Can try the 12.11 betas for the ati card. I have those on my laptop running fine, though do not try to manually create profiles for games as I caused a CCC startup-crash problem that way (had to go in and delete the profile file, as it was causing the crashes).

add: Ati tray tools is also very out of date. You'll need to look through their forums to find something recent, and even then, it's pretty old. Driver differences cause lots of problems.

If you're going to be a passive aggressive snot about advice that people give, at least have the decency to use a customer service line, as that won't immortalize your asshattery on the Internet.

ATI Tray Tools is superior to the bloatware that is CCC. However, by all means, continue to use CCC. It is clearly what must be done, so says someone who does not know what they are doing, and who does not like the advice they are given.

Was about to edit in to try other tools as well, like MSI Afterburner, as it has profiles and such to modify settings. It's also been updated within the last few days, so I'd give it a shot. It's more for overclocking your cards but seems to have some options.

At minimum, just deal with this game not playing nice no matter what you use. Reduce settings.

if you're going to misunderstand the general frustration people express at various suggestions not working for them... n/m not going to start this.

oh yeah i'm going to use ATT, the superior program that freezes my computer as soon as i reach desktop. i'm open to suggestions on how to get it working, but so far i don't exactly have much of a choice to use a program that not only doesn't work but freezes my whole computer. get over yourself, it was general frustration, not anything directed at you.

    orinthia:

yeah it's interesting, i've been having a bunch of frame rate issues, and on my geforce 670, 2 things seem to solve it: turn off shadows, and disable AA. i could accept this if it wasn't for the fact that my much weaker computer with a much weaker graphics card didn't have any such problems, so i'm trying to figure out what i'm doing wrong, though i get the feeling it's just an extension of the general compatibility problems between ffxi and higher end cards i've been hearing about, since turning off shadows seems to fix those too. hopefully either nvidia or SE will do some optimizing as the drivers are updated and SoA are coming out but... general consensus on the internet about that doesn't seem very optimistic.

ok so msi afterburner, that is an option that came up in my research, but that's a program only for msi cards isn't it? my card is a Gigabyte, though both the 7970 and the 670 are still under warranty, so i can return them at anytime. i noticed that the most recent version of ATT was updated in like late 2011, even though the problem i came across was discussed in their forums earlier this year.

edit: n/m i found some information that msi afterburner works for any card... last ditch effort then i guess here we go...

msi afterburner is no go... if those kinds of controls are there i can't see 'em. ah well guess i'll just wait for either nvidia or SE to fix something.

The shadows thing is an annoying problem. Most players just deal with never having shadows on full or even enabled. I know mine can't deal with it; its the integrated 6520G on my laptop (discrete card in the laptop refuses to run the game; runs with most every other game I've tried though).

Do not wait though. There is no fix coming, since this issue is not new. It's been there for years. Game's too old for them to care.

yeah ech game just looks so stupid without shadows. and it's insane that my quadcore 9300 with a gtx 560 ti can run the game at full sprint no problem, but it suffers from frame rate drops in my i-5 with a gtx 670, especially considering the latter handles modern games with zero problem... gah i rue the day years ago when i was convinced that computers were way better than consoles for gaming. RUE it!!!
