Normal Person + anonymity + audience = Total **ckwad, so Penny Arcade has taught me.
WoW established MMORPG norms that most properties just won't be able to deviate from. It's like complaining that hot dogs and apple pie are considered All American and lamenting the fact that people still gravitate towards them. The reality is that, unless you really set out to be the shinning star that's different, and honestly, that's a completely unreasonable expectation from most companies, you're better off combining the best of both worlds, adding your own flair in and creating something that will be familiar to the broadest base but has your distinct taste.
I would LOVE to play a FF game that combined the ease of use and functionality of the 'WoW' interface that gave the combined combat experience of fighting things like Ouryu, BahamaMama V2, Ixion (the most fun NM every created, once you claimed), or even Pandamonium Warden LVL 75 cap (Best NM LS event). If AAR could accomplish at least this, then I'm pretty confident they'll have a large player base for a good many years.
Wow, I love the new gathering interface; knowing what you can get, and your chances of getting it is brilliant, though, someone please give feedback to change the icon color for nodes on the minimap; Gold on Gold is not so good....
Crafting is much more simplified, and hopefully at later levels, the use of the skills shown will have a lot more flexibility on the HQ outcome. Again, liking what I'm seeing.
With each passing day, more and more OFers are getting alpha invites. With each passing day, more and more OFers are starting new-yet-tired threads about how the game feels like a "themepark" MMO because of actual quests and the ability to solo in an Alpha.
SE should have seriously just kept 1.0 going and split the two games. OF idiots can keep their husk of a game.
I still refuse to do gathering. Boring as hell despite the new UI/changes.
The best part of the revamp is how you no longer spend an hour gathering to walk away with 5 stacks of moko grass/random feather or log and only 30 of what you were initially after.
^
While it will still probably be pretty boring to grind. Now you actually can aim to what you want to farm and it's sooo fabulous.
Go and read the "I want the gathering mini game back because it involved skill," put a gun in your mouth and make sure I'm behind you when you fire
Crafting still sucks, Gathering is a whole lot better. One of the letdowns I have about 2.0 thus far.
Why do you think crafting sucks?
I enjoyed it personally. The only thing I think is missing now is being able to do multiple synths at a time, without the need to click Synthesize after each time.
Have they said if this is the way crafting and gathering is going to function, or is it another item on the list of major change for Beta?
This is basically it. No major changes to be introduced afair.
Way back in the initial release of FFXIV and its official forum, along with the shitstorm of personnel changes and game change designs and whining about "it's not XI!", there was this thread about "LOYALTY MODE" where people play with the assbackwards system of bygone years. SE should do this to shut the mouth-breathers up, and charge an additional $15 per month just so they could take advantage of the poor saps who would later go back to XI and whine about the new system.
The official video shows everything I'm going to say: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH_tH-83doc so no NDA breach, I don't even alpha bro, etc etc
You get extra exp the first time you craft something (when it gets "ticked" in the journal). Imo they just need to make that exp a little higher so you're encouraged to do different recipes from your level range rather than spamming the same thing (I don't think the journal exp is affected by rested exp, at 4:31 the exp from the normal synth has the +rested bonus and the extra exp doesn't).
The only other thing I'd like to see is the possibility of queuing synths when I'm a few levels above them. No point in making us do a ton of low level maple lumber synths manually if we don't care about HQing them.
Besides that I don't see what's so terrible about the system (that we have seen so far)
Except they kinda are trying to reinvent the wheel. If DoH and DoL were supposed to be secondary skills you screw around with in between the "real" game, then they wouldn't need their own gear, quests, and leves. SE obviously wants crafting to feel more important and meaningful, even if they may be pulling back from the 1.0 dreams of bringing a DoH to an exp party (or whatever they were planning). If they can't be interesting experiences by themselves, they may as well just be a 2nd set of numbers like any other MMO (side note: I really like they way Firefall handles crafting. Crafting gear cuts out the tedium while still giving you meaningful choices).
THAT SAID, I seriously doubt the full wave of adjustments would be in alpha. Classes before a certain point feel flat in terms of identity, these are likely the base skills that make up the core of the activity and it won't get interesting until past the level allowed at the alpha stage. Also, a large part of the Armory system is different class skills overlapping with each other. We're looking at this crafting class through the lens of a single playable class at low level.
I must go back and read on stuff then, because I don't remember any huge-system changes mentioned, aside of the improvements here and there. Both systems should work as showed in the video.
It sucks(currently) because I don't see instant crafting, the minigame was a huge complaint by everyone that quit and was the number one issue with the entire system. I could have swore Yoshi said there would be instant crafting in 2.0 unless you wanted to focus on HQ'ing a long time ago.
