Personally I liked the combat at the end f 1.23. Different strokes for different folks.

Your problem is that if a game doesn't play to your specific standards it must be flawed. I know you think you're the judge and the jury when it comes to MMOs but you're not man.
Nobody said they wanted GW2 in here, I said that dodge mechanics have existed in alpha games in MMOs, hence disproving your silly little attempt at an assertion.

My problem is you and your hilarious opinions, nothing else. I have no problem with 2.0. other than SE's wierd attempt at drumming up hype by using strange alpha footage.

Its like you haven't read this thread over the last 10 pages. Color me surprised.

@Cichy: I was speaking more in terms of abilities, not "stand behind the pillar". Abilities that actually move your character, such as Disengage for Hunters or dodge-roll mechanics in GW. My apologies for not making that clear, and yes, I'm very relieved to hear that there's more examples of "don't stand in the fire".

I wonder how Ifrit stands up to some of the hard modes out there that feature essentially Armageddon.

Man, Ifrit doesn't have shit on

4 tower, Flame Leviathan.
Firefighter, Mimiron.
Iron Council where you kill Steelbreaker last.
3 Elder, Freya.
Killing Hodir in 2 minutes while utilizing all the buff's from various NPC's.
Killing General Vezax without breaking saronite crystals(which means no mana regen the entire fight)
Thaddius from Naxx, getting the wrong polarity charge, meaning if you're negative charge and you stay on positive charge player, you blow up the entire raid.
4 horsemen from Naxx where tanks had to run a relay to swap targets so their mark(debuff) doesn't stack too high and become unhealable.
Heigan the Unclean, Dance mob.
Professor Putricide, one player had to control a giant undead construct to suck slime pools off the floor, kite slimes, kill slimes, dodge slimes being thrown.

I could list on and on, the raid bosses in BC just CC'ed the shit out of your raid and you still had mechanics to deal with.

I hope that SE comes up with some really cool fights in 2.0, I think some of the hunt mobs later on in FF12 were a hell of a lot better designed than some of the fights we saw in FFXIV, lol. Shit, Yunalesca in FFX was a hell of a lot more creative fight than most of the encounters I remember in any FF game.

God, I loved HM Putricide. One person fucking up = do it over! Again!

Oh yeah, that's a nostalgia bomb right there. Four Horseman? So amazing for its time. Like a super Divine Might that you couldn't break with a bunch of black mages.

I wouldn't say Ifrit extreme was the most challenging fight I've ever been a part of, but it's up there. I felt Garuda battle did a much better job of working within the limitations of the game engine + showing us what SE can cook up on relatively short notice for a game that had an expiration date.

See, I don't find mechanics like this challenging. They're just stupid. Heard a ton of crap like this during Rift's early days. Asking for raid perfection is nice and all, but I find teamwork stuff to be far more rewarding to accomplish than personal responsibility things.

The only ability that currently moves you is Dragoons elusive jump. I honestly doubt there will be anything like dodge in 2.0. However, the way movement was set up in 1.0 allowed for fights much more position oriented. It's one beef I have with the movement in alpha that when you press back you no longer run back. It could impact how they designed content like Ifrit.

They are retard checks. The boss abilities that wipes a raid if the person targeted fails are usually never that hard, because they can not be, if they were the boss would be impossible since no guild has 25 super good players. If you fail at those abilities we've seen so far in WoW and Rift (Rift pre-expansion, did not play after), you derserve to be yelled at.
I can see a bit where you're comming from. It's a fine line, I want to get challenged personally, but I also don't want to wipe 20 times in a row because some idiot who didn't figure the fight out keeps messing up.
I personally think a bit of the problem is old FFXI players, seriously. I've seen over and over a lot of so called "top level end game players" move over to other games thinking they were good gamers, and fail so hard it's not even funny. Don't think of FFXI and FFXIV as games that requiered skills, if you do, you'll have a harsh wakeup.

Probably yo, I got a couple of world 2nd kills in WoW to show bro (and a ton of top 15). Have never played Dark souls though, never had a console above PS2 , might get it for PC though. But yeah, I get that you were sarcastic.

Well I cant tell you one thing. It's gonna be a while before you see difficult content like you're used to in WoW in XIV. Right now they need to cater to the most common denominator. However, saying that fights like Ifrit did not require any skill is bit much bro...

It's just what it looks like and what I've heard from the people I know who played FFXIV, true or not I dunno, never played the game. Considering Lordender's list, where some of those fights were not super challenging and still harder than Ifrit, well...
Endgame does not need to be hard as balls from the get go, as long as the potential is there. Some games you can just see "yeah this game will never have any bosses/fights that will be tough", GW2 as an example, it's all about the gameplay really. Seriously, I do not mind waiting for a long time for challenging fights, as long as the content is at least fun and you got a good group to play with.

I'd say the "lack" of perceived difficulty comes from the fact that the game feels so damned restrictive in comparison to other games. Movement, abilities, freedom, ect.

I never said that they were as or more challenging. I said Ifrit was the most challenging fight I've been involved in.
Important thing is that Yoshi and the new battle team already proven with Garuda, Ifrit, Darnus, and other fights that they can thing outside the box. They not blindly copying FFXI and we're not going to be standing on mobs feet for next 10 years. I think the fights Yoshi added were a wake up call to alot of FFXI players who never expected they going to have to run during combat to get away from the mob or a tornado in the middle of the battlefield. Some people stumbled and said the fights are too difficult, some like BG guild found them too easy. However, overall I think most of us were pleasantly surprised and ultimately fights were fun.
I would not be half as excited for 2.0 if I did not witness the changes Yoshi made in 1.0.

Cichy listed several examples of "avoiding AoE."

These were my other opinions
watching an mmo being played isn't the same as actually playing the thing. Of course it looks silly to a passive bystander.

And...

Music sounded great, looked great visually, and seemed very fluid as far as menus and animations. Especially for an Alpha. I think there is still a chance if they get the content and combat right.
Which opinion of mine is so hilarious to you Lucavi? The alpha footage wasn't strange to me at all. It actually made me interested enough to look for other vids and even come back to this forum.

Again...... different strokes for different folks.

Speaking of GW2 I was so psyched for that game to come out, now I can't even play it. Mad grinding for skins is about as bad as grinding for titles in GW1. >< Spend forever grinding to get a legendary that's no better than your exotic.

I was psyched for D3 too and that turned out meh after a few months. FFXIV is something I keep coming back to though and it's always fun for me. Feel like you're making progressions, the community is a lot better. Anyone else like that or am I just a faggot?

I don't disagree, but, for me, some of it is just the genre itself. I've grown tired of grinding in MMO settings, while, strangely, I have no problem grinding the shit out of things like Civ V or sim games. Like, I'll grind the ever loving piss out out of Sim City when it drops, but the thought of logging into GW2 right now and having to repeat even a single event for a prize seems so unappealing to me.

That's why I say it might just be genre burnout. We grind in a lot of games without problems, but MMOs seem to somehow make it feel all the worse. I mean, shit, you're essentially grinding in a COD game as well, but people go back again and again. Its why I'm careful not to critcize SE for too many grindy mechanics; we play plenty of games with grinds, but the more you can physically see and feel the grind, the worse it seems. GW2's grind, at this point, is very visible and I think it turns off a lot of people. Why the devs decided to go the Korean route in terms of droprates for certain things is beyond me. I was hoping we were past that era.

It's same with me. I tried both those titles and I've had more fun in XIV in those few months past 1.23 than I've had with both those titles combined. I think for me it comes down to how I am attached to my character and the way I interact with the game world. I'm very fond of my character and I like how much time I've spent in XI and XIV doing group events. For me games like Rift and GW2 feel like solo games and it's hard for me to treat them seriously.
