agree with this, gw2 feels more like a singleplayer game with online mode rather then a real mmo, most of the time you run arround and lvl up solo, you do everything solo. the only event you need a group for is dungeons and once you are lvl 80 the game gets boring fast anyways
I had way more fun with ffxi and ffxiv then with lolgw2
but why are we talking about gw2 anyways this is a ffxiv forum
Wait, I thought GW2 was meant to be the killer of all MMOs just because it was free and some early trailers looked good?
Nah, like most free MMORPGs they are only free because they know the game isn't good enough to take a monthly fee for. I asked most of my friends if they'd be okay with a small fee, just something like $8 a month for GW2 (standard EU fees for an MMORPG is what, $14-17, not sure how it all translated into dollar), they all said no.
Well this is a weird situation. FFXIV fanatics knocking GW2 down as not being good enough for a monthly fee. I suppose i shouldn't be surprised. Back in the old days, FFXI fans (including me, when i lacked a heart, a brain, and a dick) used to swear up and down that FFXI was better than WoW in the safety of their bubbles. They used to say stuff like how WoW had no community but FFXI had one (even though that community was largely composed of status seeking shemales), or that FFXI looked more realistic and less cartoony or that FFXI was a real challenge and WoW was easy mode (in those days standing around was considered a riveting experience for most FFXI gamers). As the love affair with FFXI waned, FFXI gamers soon came to realize how crappy the game they loved truly was, and they stopped making excuses for it. They merely came to terms with the fact that the game they loved was objectively worse than some other games, but nonetheless FFXI appealed to their very particular interests that simply weren't standard.
I certainly hope we don't have to relive those experiences. Lessons should stay learned.
If this is in any way directed at me: I have never played FFXIV, ever, and if you see my posts here, most of them are regarding me being concerned about shit in FFXIV 2.0, so yeah I'm hardly an FFXIV fanatic. In GW2 I got 2 legendaries, fractals at lvl 35 something, 4 sets of exotics, 4000 achievements (before I sold the account). I know what's up with GW2.
I'm amazed by how arround here, so many people seem to pretty much dislike if not hate FFXI lol
I assumed more were just like me, l.o.v.e.d FFXI, till they raised level cap anyway, and never managed to find another mmo they'd love as much.
Hell, if SE opened an oldschool ToAU/WoG server with enough people interested i'd insta join and would never even consider playing FFXIV.
Perhaps am i a little crazy about XI but still, the more I read these boards the more i'm amazed by how people seem to have actually not enjoyed their XI experience. Not pointing at you in particular at all Kuya, just a general impression
Most all of us that played it on here loved it while we played, because it was to us at the time a great game. I still can look back and say I loved playing FFXI, I have many fond memories from it. This though, does not in any way change the fact that the game is a piece of shit, it was just a piece of shit that I loved.
Edit: Basically I'm a pig who loved rolling around in shit.
To be completely objective here, it's not entirely clear whether or not you lift.
@Kami: Not everyone who played FFXI were forced to question what made FFXI good, even the people who were worse off in terms of gear or activity. A lot of people on this board came to the conclusion that what you really enjoyed in FFXI either was done better by another game or existed outside of gameplay (e.g. the community). Hell, I remember a person who specifically said that they only kept playing because of the excellent texturing (for the time). Games like WoW and the rise of iphone games show that most people may like some HD but at the end of the day don't give a fuck.
Most of us loved FFXI. After the rose colored glasses came off though, some became highly resentful of the game when they started to compare it to other games. Those of us who stayed with FFXI became highly defensive of FFXI in response to the highly aggressive attacks from those who left the game. It's been years since all that drama, and i think most of us now accept that FFXI was always a mediocre game, but we liked it anyway. We just accepted the fact that our tastes weren't in the majority of what counts as a great MMO, and stopped being defensive about it.
Aren't you the king of bashing other's based on their opinions?
Not that I don't mind it (I don't), but it seems weird for you to make this comment.
@Kami: There's a difference between enjoying time spent in a game and wanting to play that same game for the next 30 years without any form of updates. There's also a difference between enjoying time spent with friends within a game played together and actually enjoying the game for being some kind of superior product. 48 hour spawns for .3% droprates is not a superior product. I don't care what someone can try to argue. Its one piece of the game, but its a piece that the elite of BG spent over half a decade camping again and again, so yeah, its pretty important to the history of that game.
@SD: Considering that your track-record for MMo experience consists of playing the most broken classes of XI, and then mastering the complex, deep, strategic and ultimately super-successful XIV 1.0, I don't think you're in any sort of realistic position to talk about how much movement XIV did or did not have in its fights compared to other games. I don't care if you had to constantly run on a treadmill during Ifrit Hard Mode: it is -NOT- on the same level with hard modes of other games. Not in the slightest. It doesn't have to be, either, but christ, get yourself a Hard Mode Ifrit flag and wave it around SE headquarters if you love it so much.
I played 11, lots of drama, niche emotional stuff-- it was a fun holy-bolt trolling experience.
Overall? It was v. fun~ and I can't wait to try out FFXIV.
Why?
...because I am a masochist.
XIV doesn't have the drama that XI has, and, barring some catastrophic return to the dark ages of MMO content (which not enough people will pay for to keep a marquis product like this in the black), you won't see it again.
Oh, but you'll still see cheating, backstabbing, glitching, abusing and all that. Games change, but human nature never changes.
Because it is relevant at times. MMOs do not exist inside a bubble. If a developer neglects all that is successful out there, they are doing it wrong. See FFXIV v1.0.
I hardly believe your group of friends represents the norm. In my own community it's the opposite--some people would rather pay a small fee to put pressure on the developers to flesh out the entire game, rather than what they whimsically feel is wrong. It can go either way and it's a matter of perspective.
I don't remember bashing anyone. I stated I didn't like GW2 or D3, and that I agreed with the other guy. I didn't post any snarky gifs about people having a different opinion than me. My problem is not the opinion but the childish internet reaction.
But whatevs, internet arguing is pointless so i'm gonna stop here.
I might have missunderstood you (feel free to correct me then), but the reason they don't want to pay for GW2 is that they do not think it's good enough to pay for, they have all played different MMORPGs over the years and have no beef with paying monthly fees. I'd choose a decent/good P2P anyday over a F2P game I only play because it is free. (Again not sure if this is relevant to your point).
you find a reason to bash FF11 no matter what I feel lol, no joke I feel anytime I see your avatar its always aimed at ffxi sucked. Every game is just MEH at best. There are people who love it and people who hate it. hell look at CoD, ask any real shooter fans and its SHIT. Yet its the single most suscess game franchise ever. Each release breaks its past records LOL
FFXI has some major pit falls we all understand that. And wow really did not have so many. This is because they did everything people asked for. SE treated FFXI more as an art, they took a hard hit when 14 was treated the same way without the backing of the faithful fans. ffxi arguably is one of the most successful mmorpgs(if we go off money made its most likely top5)
I still play FFXI lightly(i did play other MMOs aion, wow) No idea why but the game never held me past the lvl cap much. WoW I had a strong guild too. I might give it a go again if I ever have more free time.
edit: I still cant forget the feeling of the early days of dynamis; Hoping you do not DElvl exping before hand. Happy at a chance at your #1 items. I can not think of any time I have ever felt that way in another MMO. Kings sucked, but other parts of the game like limbus, sky(pre gil seller take over) was great. It became a chore for many of us who finished our sets and that is what took away the great feeling. SE took forever with new updates.
Wow has updates and so much that you could do shit forever and a half lol.
I loved FFXI 7 years ago when I started, and I look back and love FFXI now, 3 years after I've quit. It had faults and a dev team were as strict as Nazis, which made it fall short in many areas, but even so I had great fun and don't regret a minute of playtime. WoW didn't and still doesn't float my boat, but different strokes for different folks, I can see it's appeal. Just because the game is outdated by modern standards doesn't mean it was or is shit.
I don't want FFXIV to be a FFXI clone and I don't want it to be a WoW clone. But each game has things I think would benefit the game - loads of people on these forms write FFXI off and say it has nothing of use that can be brought to XIV. BG has so much FFXI bashing, it's really weird.
