^ What MMOs have you played, Jakson? Just give me a moderate list, because I can see exactly what you're saying in XI, but not in some other MMOs. Playing games like DOTA and such; if you're not coordinating team attacks, ehhh... I mean, it goes on and on.

Some of the best times I had playing MMOs was being on vent talking shit to the person fucking up. Or cracking up/laughing over random retarded shit.

You don't have a very good shell with very good people if you can't hop on and talk for a few hours at a time. I kept my vent server open even after quitting the game I'd originally opened it for just because it's fucking awesome to bullshit with your buddies.

Events or not, get a server and bullshit with your LSmates. It's gud.

Well I suppose, but we were all close enough that no one took anything that seriously. Lighthearted jokes and friendly bashing is pretty common among friends I'd like to think.

It's really irrelevant, because hearing it shouldn't be any different than reading it in log.

If people seriously think voip is only for discussing in-game crap, they're far off the mark. To call it pointless on any level is ridiculous. Bonding with your guildmates is a huge reason to use voice chat. If you are of the above opinion that voice chat sucks, you're probably also one of those people who doesn't get invested in your guild and it's likely you just bounce around all the time too. When you find a good group and you wanna become a part of it truly, it's a step worth taking to get to know people on a semi-personal level. It improves the experience and makes it easier to provide and accept feedback for the whole group when everyone's on a level.

Seriously, I cannot even begin to describe all the benefits of it over time. Just do it and you may find it changes your experience for the better. That is, if you care enough to allow yourself to see the characters on your screen as more than crudely drawn avatars of the real people that play them.

Certainly not WoW, at least. Perhaps 1.0's is so easy that you can roll with that (God knows XI is), but I doubt 2.0's will be, as it seems like its absolutely heading the way of the semi-modern MMO in terms of difficulty. Less about droprates and more about getting the fuck out of the fire or behind the pillar or across the chasm.

Seriously, people talk about bonds without embracing voice chat. I'd love to see a game like Mechwarrior played online without voice chat. Hell, I wouldn't have played Rift at all if not for voicechat; running through the instances while cracking up on vent was the best.

i don't even talk to people i went to highschool outside of facebook. but my Friends from XI are my niggas for life

Meeting interesting people is 60% of the reason i play MMOS.

Its another form of the FGC, really. I'm going on 8 years with some of my XI friends; been too their weddings and all. Just got back from a holiday party with a bunch of old TF2 friends. Friends are friends, and if you're going to shove people into an "online-only, never speaking!" column, then that's pretty sad.

No kidding. I had my tight cliques, close friends, and shit-talking/jovial statics throughout XI and never once used voice chat.

Voice chatting has an entirely different dynamic than text. I, for one, don't usually try to bring that into my video games that I'm trying to generally use to escape my everyday uncomfortable social interaction.
Also, 99% of the time, I'm hanging out with my roommate/ladyfriend in the same room and am having some sort of conversation with them and putting on a headset almost completely secludes me from that.

I'll listen to vent or whatever if "leaders" have something up their ass and can't trust that I know what the fuck I'm doing... I just don't care to do the whole group chat thing. One-on-one is different, text is different, but putting a mic on and speaking to a small group is not something you can criticize anyone for avoiding without being a massive asshole.
