    Cheap Tablets

First black Friday / cyber Monday in the states and I'm thinking of sending home some cheap android tablets back to my two (energetic and rough-housing prone) 7 yr old nephews.

Looking for cheap and cheerful, preferably at the 100 dollar range each, but could hit 150 if it really warranted it.

As an aside, I'm hoping to root them and configure them before giving it to the devilspawn, so a tablet that would be easy enough to root would be sweet.

Looking around on Amazon / walmart / tigerdirect / etc, there seems to be alot in my price range, but they seem to be riddled with conflicting reviews. Any help would be much appreciated

Nexus 7 all of the way. If you don't mind no rear camera, and less memory than the iPad 4, then it's your best bet for cost. Ironically it's also slightly more durable than iPad 4/Mini and Nook.

^ What they said. Best value for the money if you're looking for really good and cheap tablets. I'm sure you can find cheap KIRFs but those will give you issues down the line for sure.

I'm also looking for a tablet. Nexus 7 seems really nice. But not for around the OPs price of ~$100. I can't seem to find one for less than $199.99.. Am I missing something?

What do you guys think of the Samsung Galaxy?

That'd be great; my budget is anything under $200. Looking for a tablet that takes decent photos, with a 8-10 hour battery life and is slightly durable. Husband wants to be able to take it with him to take photographs of job sites (environmental science) and send them from or near his jobs. I'd like to use it for e-books and light web surfing. Gaming/awesome video aren't really a necessity since we have nice desktops for that.
Searching Nexus 7 on Amazon, BestBuy, Newegg and TigerDirect- gives me tablets around $250-$300.. But that Samsung Galaxy keeps popping up at just under $200. Galaxy seems to have good reviews but wondered what you guys thought of them. Would be our first tablet so I'm not sure how to shop for one.

He really will not be wanting a tablet for picture taking. Even a standard cheap point and shoot will produce much better pictures.

Thanks for the help guys; between ye're endorsements and looking up reviews online its not worth risking it with a random off brand.

In regards to the nexus, a few annoying things came up but will still probably go with it. 1) No HDMI output. 2) no expandable memory ( I had just bought 16GB cards on amazon but luckily could cancel them in time) and 3) no rear camera.

Also, I can't find any 8GBs anymore, seems they are sold out anywhere I look as they aren't being made anymore.

Echoing Aethyr; I did see the samsung galaxy for about 170, thoughts?

    Cheap Tablets

Just bought my youngest the 8gb galaxy from best buy and grabbed a 32gb card I got for a steal. So far she loves, it looks great and runs all the kid games/netflix/etc without a hitch. My only complaint is I couldn't find any cases in store for it and had to order one online. I would have prefered to be able to pick one in person. Battery life was something I was worried about with her running it nonstop and seems to be lasting 5-7hrs depedning on what shes doing on it.

I'm almost certain they have canceled production on 8 GB (and will soon cancel 16 GB as well) to roll out 32 GB Nexus 7 models.

Galaxy is still a legit tablet as well, but it does have some peculiar pitfalls that you might want to look out for:

    1) No scratch resistant glass.
    2) Momo sound.
    3) Dual Core Processor (a non issue for a youngster).

This is an older video, but it still has some relevance:

The portrait mode settings can be changed, unlike what he mentions however.

The kindle fire is $129 today (cyber monday deal). How easy is it to unlock/root and put pure android on it?
