WII Minii?

I'm mostly curious as to why they would have chosen to limit this to Canada. Is there some sort of trend in their sales data for that region that would somehow justify it? I can't really imagine...

Most people who own a wii don't even know that vc exists, its only a feature to core gamers which nintendo doesn't care about anymore

Could be a region the Wii did poorly in. Maybe they're testing the market with a new option for future products. I can't see them being able to test in too many places what with so much production manpower working to keep up with the demand of the WiiU.

It's pretty much softmod-proof then.
512mb onboard will be more than enough for Wii game saves at any rate with all the additional fluff (Wii Store, the network-related crap) gone.

[EDIT] I'm now curious if it'll even have the 'channels' menu, since there'd be jack shit for it to populate with outside of the Disc and Mii channel.

Digital Foundry does a quick look and teardown of the thing. Surprisingly.......it is negligibly smaller than the Wii; not enough to justify the 'Mini' title all things told.

Seems the OS is fully intact though, including 4 pages of channels, of which you'll never populate since you have nothing to download software with. Just a Wii Disc Menu, Mii Maker, and a Manual Channel! The USB internet adapter does not work either, and for kicks, it only has one USB port, which for me is unheard of in modern times.

Guess it would have been too much for them to just change that channel layout to reflect the limitations of this hardware revision. I'm still curious to get one eventually (I expect this to hit Gamecube-levels of cheapness at some point) since it's just a tad more expensive than buying a WiiMote+ & Nunchuk separately, which I'll need more (working controllers) of for the eventual WiiU I pick up in a year or two.

The product placement for it baffles me at any rate, at least in Canada. Here we are with the recently released WiiU, and all I see at my Walmarts in the Wii/WiiU section is a row of Wii Minis, nothing else. That's going to confuse some customers looking for the 'new' Wii system, the Wii U.

Though the Wii has been discontinued in Japan, Nintendo announced in October that the traditional Wi-Fi-enabled Wii system will remain on store shelves in America.

Ignoring the major question of why anyone would buy this, I thought they had stopped making the Wii? Is that just for the original model and they're going to continue making these..?

Yes, they've stopped making the original console, and the only thing they're going to be manufacturing from now on is this. Japan and Europe will not be receiving any more original model Wiis, and any that remain were likely already allocated strictly to the North American market.
