Basic cable is 360p, normal for a crt tv, awful on an HDTV. Tuners pick up a min of 480i up to 1080i( I is less than p of the same number, but more than a lesser number in p).

I had a similar deal, gave up more free channels than the cable gave so I just unplugged it until I got a better internet only deal.

i and p don't mean more or less of anything i and p stand for interlaced and progressive scan respectively and have to do with how the tv scans the image onto the TV. The resolution of the TV is the same in both cases.

While the resolution is the same the amount pixels that are displayed at the same time is halved for interlaced which is pretty noticeable to anyone with a discerning eye.

Yeah I understood the point he was making. I am not sure how it is now but in older CRT tv's an interlaced tv scanned every other line of resolution at twice the speed that progressive scan scanned in the whole screen so an interlaced tv still scanned in the entire picture in the same amount of time that a progressive scan tv did. They just scanned the picture in with a different method. You could not see any resolution difference between the two methods but if you looked really closely you could see aliasing problems and flicker with the interlaced scan tv's.

To further the derail, most HD TVs that run at 720i or 1080i effectively have half the refresh rate of 720p and 1080p HD TVs. The interlaced TVs refresh every other line of pixels each cycle. That is why you see aliasing and flickering.
