Another Middle East Crisis, Syrian Special "WMD"

Damascus has fallen, speculation that Assad's plane with him and his family on it was shot down. The prison holding Syria's political prisoners is currently being emptied and destroyed.

Good day for Syrians today, hopefully not a bad one tomorrow as these guys very much are al Qaeda.

ye the Syrian army has collapsed and is surrendering throughout the country, real Afghan army hours.

but, the insurgents are not al-Qaeda. the leading group who launched the offensive is Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly the al-Nusra Front, who were indeed the Syrian affiliate of al-Qaeda. but they and their leader, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, had a hard break with al-Qaeda in 2016, rebranding themselves, and putting their AKs where their mouths were by fighting against al-Qaeda loyalists and purging them from their controlled territory. in recent years they've sworn off violent actions against other nations and vowed to protect religious minorities. they are still Islamists, still authoritarians, but their administration in Idlib suggests a much moderated form of who they were.

issue is further complicated that while they launched the initial offensive, they are not the only offensive in town. what is left of the Syrian army holds the country's west, the Alawite heartland (tho they shouldn't have any fight left in them), the south was taken by the Southern Operations Room consisting of a loose coalition of moderates including the Syrian Free Army, the east is controlled by our Kurdish allies, and the north is ruled by Turkey and their SIG allies who have fought against HTS before.

greatest concern right now is indeed what comes next. lot of different factions hitherto only loosely united by a hatred of Assad. only hope more war isn't to come. wouldn't be stoked about even moderate Islamists attaining power either. some kind of power-sharing structure like in Lebanon would be ideal. we shall see.
