To be fair no SO game had AMAZING story or characters, but they were certainly less terrible than 4s.

I liked 4 for the gameplay, shit was fun so I trust the game will be that if nothing else.

was 4 worse than 3 for plot/characters and whatnot? i couldn't make it past ~10hrs in SO3 because of those, if they managed to surpass that in the sequel, that deserves an award of some sort.

4 is 10x better than 3, but 3 was just so bad that it made little children cry, and puppies cower in terror in a corner. It simply wasn't on the level of SO1&2, though. I think if they spent more time on the PA's, and character interactions then SO4 could have been a lot better, but imo this is where it really fell off. Not to mention in doing a prequel you kind of limit where the story can go without making it completely irrelevant.

Honestly, they should just make an extension of SO3 and start it out with Cloude Kenni suddenly waking up and stating "WOW I'm glad that was all just a dream!" and then it follows up on further adventures with him and Rena

SO4 didn't fuck up the entire plot ( /universe) with a single twist, and while a certain character is far more annoying than I thought humanly possible, the rest of the cast is pretty decent. Except Edge, who goes emo for a while then returns to his old boring self.

I honestly don't know how to rate SO3 and 4 in terms of characters, but both are definitely worse for those than SO1 and 2.

On the bright side, shit's fun.

I always did the bonus dungeons for every SO until I got to 4. Didn't even bother with that one. I sped through the game just so I could finish it. Didn't like any of the characters in 4 cept the scythe dude and only because the scythe dude knew why he was there and acted accordingly without being a bitch about it. Honestly, Maria would've made a better main character than Edge and I grew to like her as the story went on.

SO3 had Fayt who kinda sucked as a story character but was broken as shit as a PC. Sophia when you learned the right spells was deadly. Cliff stayed a boss the whole time and then you had motherfucking Albel. Even the other characters I didn't outright hate cept for maybe Roger because fuck him.

SO2 had the best chatacter ever in a Star Ocean, Ashton. Then there's Dias and Rena. Only liked Claude as a PC because his combos were pretty good. 10 wise men are some of my favorite boss fights in any RPG.

SO games are made by Tri-Ace, not SE. Also other than helping with FFXIII-2 I don't think Tri-Ace has been working on anything else lately (that we know of).
Either way if it's announced now it's either a social game or something for this gen, likely handhelds.
