For several years following the series' cancellation, Smith has announced plans to make an animated direct-to-video film. The basic plot involved Dante and Randal making a movie about their lives at the Quick Stop, a reference to the production of the original film. As of September 2009, the status on the project is unknown. In a recent interview Kevin Smith expanded on the delays surrounding the film. Apparently, when Harvey and Bob Weinstein left Miramax, owned by Disney, the split was not completely amicable. The rights to the Clerks television show are still owned by the Disney Corporation, who as a result are reluctant to work with The Weinstein Company, throwing the future of Clerks: Sell Out into question.[2] At the 2007 Cornell Q/A Kevin said due to the Miramax/Weinstein argument "you will see a Jay and Silent Bob cartoon before Clerks: Sell Out."

However, when Miramax was bought in 2011, Kevin Smith revealed on his podcast 'Jay And Silent Bob Get Jobs' is that Miramax has contacted him for new projects, and they discussed the possibility of bringing back the series.[3]

There's still hope! But it sounds like he doesn't want to do shit anymore.

I think w/e made it fail at the start, would have it succeed now that people are used to family guy.

The culture of prime time animation has changed a great deal since then, too. That came out in like 1999 right? I remember being in high school and we were so excited. The next day at school we were all going, "Who is driving? Bear is driving?! How can this be!" I'm not exactly sure why the show failed. It's very smart especially considering that just about every crutch Smith and company often use were taken away. No profanity, no overt sexual references, no drug use. I think it failed due to a combination of the network not really supporting it. ABC only played two episodes, out of order, and then pulled it. Other networks were interested in picking it up (like Comedy Central and Adult Swim) but ABC didn't want to sell the rights. ABC picked it up in the late 90's rush to have edgy animated programming, but dropped it when they got a hit with Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? On the DVD Smith admits they should have went with UPN but were convinced by ABC that UPN was a joke.

Moral of the story? Fuck ABC.

Which, honestly, is when he does his best work. Seems the less fucks he gives (about the execs and the revenue and the studios etc), the better the material he creates.

When he cares about what the studio wants, we get things like Zack and Miri or Cop Out (which to be fair, I still haven't seen, but I don't think I've heard anything good about it). Kevin Smith giving no fucks (Clerks, Dogma, etc.) produces a much higher quality grade of film.

He didn't write Cop Out only directed it. If you listen to his podcast, he talks about how he hated making Cop Out shortly into the movie because of Bruce Willis and it made him not direct like himself. That being said, it was still a terrible movie and Tracy Morgen is not funny at all, i don't see why people like him.

I thought the part where Tracy Morgan punches that kid in the dick was hilarious, but that's the only part of the movie I remember.

Oh my god that guy annoys the hell out of me. I heard him on the radio one time and he basically spent as much airtime as possible shouting "SOMEBODY GONNA GET PREGNANT TONIGHT!" I'd have a hard time watching any movie he's in which is why I haven't seen Cop Out yet.

I saw it, it was... not good. Entirely forgettable. And extremely un-funny. I didn't hear the podcast about it, but he talks about it at length at Too Fat For 40. While he still talks about the experience in a favorable light at that point, to me it came off as "Bruce Willis was such a big dick that working with him was difficult, and I was too much of a starstruck, intimidated wimp to do anything about it."
