Studios don't make their money back on a majority of their films (on paper) because they use shady accounting practices to operate them as a huge loss. When a movie is being made, the studio creates a separate company and then bills all production cost to it (usually at an inflated rate). This is mostly due to deals with actors. Most actors get an up front payment and then a percentage of back end gross which is the money made after the studio has paid everything off. If the studio stays in the red, then they don't have to pay the actor the back end gross percentage. The best example of this is actor David Prowse, who was the actor in the Darth Vader suit for Return of the Jedi. His contract was only for back end gross, and to this day he makes no money off of it because Lucas Film keeps the movie in the red.
But anyways, about the F4 movie itself, I think the movie was doomed (no pun intended) from the start. Remember last year it was revealed that Doom was going to be Victor Domashev: a blogger/hacktivist, and everyone lost their shit? I think that's the point where the studio came in a took over the film and had massive re-writes.
Yep
Based on early numbers the movie is falling pretty far under box office expectations. Initial projections had it in the $40 mil range, looks to be floating around $26.5 mil, losing to Mission Impossible.
TOM CRUISE FOREVERRRRRRRRRR
Every week on Grantland should be Tom Cruise week
Longish article, but a good read/opinion. It weighs the pros and cons of Marvel getting back the FF rights. Personally I wouldn't care if they had another stand alone movie. I just want them to use the villains.

Angry Joe nailed it: A Fantastic Four movie should be made in the same silly spirit as Guardians of the Galaxy. The Fantastic Four aren't a comic book group that can take itself seriously as a movie. Marvel needs it back and they need to expand their universe through a more comedic and wacky storyline and execution
A guy that's basically a rubber band man can't be portrayed as a Professor X. This franchise has always stumbled all over itself when it tries to go the direction of the serious super hero movie
I actually think the worst parts of the original were Jessica Alba and Doom.
That Doom is looking mighty fine compared to what I've seen of this new one.
They were that weird trying to be funny but kinda serious at the same time route. Also Doom's gotta be all trying to 1up reed and have an ego of a mother fucker.
The problem with the Fantastic Four is they kinda suck. They have some great villains but they are basically a dysfunctional family full of drama. Reed and Sue constantly fight, the Thing is a baby cause Hulk is a way cooler version of him, and Johnny can't stop getting flaming erections. Civil War stuff(comics)Spoiler: show
