You work in television right? Does IATSE not extend to that field?

There are multiple unions in the TV industry - for editors like myself we can be in the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_..._Editors_Guild - which is IATSE, yeah - but the vast majority of reality shows are not union signatories - they still pay well but they do not have union contracts - so for me that means no overtime pay (usually) and no guild heath care plan. The biggest reason I want to get guild work isn't so much the benefits (although that will be a bigger deal when we have kids and my wife isn't working for a while) but instead because I want to work in scripted TV editing and without union membership it's even harder to get on a gig like that.

I've considered joining the local here in NC (I'm a lighting designer, rigger and stagehand) but honestly with it being a right-to-work state IATSE is really weak here. They only have one venue locked down in the Triangle, most other places are staffed by city employees or independent staffing agencies.

Thinking about moving though, maybe to Colorado. I'd probably join up here first and put in a transfer if I decide to do that.

Just wondering... I just got my first bonus check ever (yay) and it counted as a paycheck with taxes and everything. So how do CEOs use them to limit their income when it comes to taxes? It was just bugging me because I remember John Hodgeman mentioning something like "Oh, then if the tax rate on people over $250k is going to skyrocket, I'll just cap my salary at $249,999 and give myself a four million dollar bonus."

Bonuses count as salary, I think you (or the guy you quoted) might be mixing it up with stock options.
