PhD literally stands for Doctorate of Philosophy. No matter what discipline you receive the degree in it generally just states that on the diploma. My specific area was analytical chemistry; however, I agree that it could easily be confused for a physics dissertation (though most physicists would probably disagree!).

I posted the abstract for you guys! My research focused primarily on understanding the molecular interactions observed in the terahertz region, specifically for basic biological compounds.

I worked my ass off and had no free time the last 4~8 weeks of school so I'm overall pretty happy with my grades. Kind of mad at my senior design grade, going to ask the prof if he can raise it up because I don't see a reason for it to be that low. PHI grade can't be lower than an A-, and if it's not an A I'll probably talk with the professor to see why it's not and try to get it raised.

Really liked computer architecture a lot, even more than I did embedded systems. I think I might try to get some internships with Intel/AMD/nVidia if it's possible.

Does asking your professor to raise grades actually work? I can't imagine doing that or having my professors even consider it.

I only ask when it's a matter of rounding up something like an 89.5X. The one time I did it I typed out this elaborate email describing why I deserved it, and my professor just responded with "yeah I rounded it up anyway."

I can't imagine asking a professor to "raise" my final grade under any other circumstance.

Interesting. I have a few professors from the history department who specifically include phrases like "I will never issue extra credit under any circumstance or raise grades, don't ask!" and "I round grades at my own discretion, don't request it!" in their syllabi.

For philosophy if I get an A- it's because my grade was borderline near A. 5% of the grade is participation/attendance in which I was one of the few people who actually did anything, but I missed a few important days and there was a true/false quiz in which one question that I got wrong he agreed could be both answers given my reason. But the TA graded it and not him. So I'll basically be asking/arguing for those 1-2% which would bring me up. The main problem is the quizzes were supposed to be 3x online quizzes, but he changed them to pop quizzes really late into the semester and I'll feel cheated if I don't get an A because of the bad way he handled that.

Senior design project is a year long course. There's a lecture component that's not graded but attendance is mandatory. That part went fine. We find ourselves a faculty adviser and work on a project. Hand in a report at the end of this semester and the grade is based on that, hand in the report and the project at the end of next semester and the grade is based on that. I'm going to basically ask him what was wrong with our report that caused it to only received a B. We might have handed it in late, and if that's the case and we lost points because of that I'd basically be pleading with him because both me and my partner literally passed out while finishing up the report, the last 2-3 weeks of school were hell for us both with many sleepless nights. The stars lined up to rape us.

It's not really asking them to raise my grade for no reason, but more asking them to account for things I let slide. Normally I wouldn't bother with any of this, but because I normally didn't bother with so many other mishaps in past classes I'm now just shy of a 3.0 right before I graduate. Basically I'm graduating with like a 2.98~3.02 and I'd really like to do all I can to try and graduate with at least a 3.0.

My final grade for astrophysics FINALLY just got posted. Got the A I deserved, thankfully.

3.89 for the semester. My worst semester yet, but for how much work I had, I'll happily take it.

The majority of my professors now are explicit about if they round or don't round, and not to ask about it. Otherwise it doesn't hurt to ask, worse they can do is say "tough shit."

The professors I used to hang out with hated posting grades because of the inevitable onslaught of students asking for higher marks. As a TA, it was pretty easy because I could just say a nice version of "maybe if you wouldn't have fucked around in lab all semester" and then tell them they could talk with the professor and hear him/her say no too if they were interested. Sometimes I felt sorry for the student, but generally it was pretty apparent they put the absolute minimal amount of effort towards the class...

Yep got an A in PHI100 which gives me a 3.65 for this semester. My best semester yet lol. If nothing happens with my ESE440 grade then I need another 3.65 next semester in order to get a 3.0 for graduation.
