If you got your Xbox One games at a cheaper cost because you don't have ownership rights, thats one thing.

The correct concept is buying a new car, but then when you go to sell it later, having to sell it back to that dealer ship you got it from because you don't actually own the rights to the car.

Oh, and even if you pay it off fully, the dealership has the right to take your car back at anytime.

Not so fast, vaquero. While Sony was cheered in heroic fashion for proclaiming that used games would be free and clear to operate on the PlayStation 4, it appears that the reality is actually a bit more complicated. Sony America CEO Jack Tretton has made clear today that while first-party titles will fit in with yesterday's "hands-off" approach, third-party publishers will be allowed to throw some curveballs.

"There's gonna be free-to-play, there's gonna be every potential business model on there, and again, that's up to their relationship with the consumer, what do they think is going to put them in the best fit. We're not going to dictate that, we're gonna give them a platform to publish on. The DRM decision is going to have to be answered by the third parties, it's not something we're going to control, or dictate, or mandate, or implement."

That's the new word out of Tretton's mouth, which seems to indicate that players like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Treyarch and pretty much any PS4 game maker outside of Sony's own umbrella can cobble together any combination of policies they want. You could say that it's not too different from how the PS3 operates today, but there's still plenty of room for clarifications across the industry. Hit up the source link for the full spiel.

Sure, but explain to me how any possible details like that overcome what is potentially a 2x increase in instruction throughput. Is it so hard to deal with that that you lose 50% efficiency?

I don't actually know the raw spec of what is in each piece of hardware, but I can tell you that a huge concern when optimizing for console these days is cache misses which is where you fetch memory that is "cold" and hasn't been fetched in a while. Using RAM that has better random access properties may be a bigger gain than being able to read at a higher rate from a location that is probably already heavily cached upwards.

It's not as simple as "instruction throughput is faster!" We've already been through this in CPU design; remember when the P4 had like a 40 step pipeline? Lol....

This is the part that irks me that you keep spouting off like gospel. Where has it been stated or said that you won't have your games available to you 10-12 years down the road. I really don't understand that at all.

You do see it... its like the pay what you want humble bundles. If they didn't make money that way they would not be doing that. That's not a DRM filled mess.

Yep, you do see it. And occasionally there are huge breakthrough hits this way. But all the largest game companies with the longest track record of survival don't operate this way. Draw the obvious conclusion.
