You would think that but all companies care about these days is their stocks and helping shareholders. When profits go up they push that out the door in the form of larger dividends. The best that I have seen is increasing the budget on a game in the form of acquiring a more expensive license but companies continually try to cut corners to save costs. They will always strive to make games with the smallest team possible cutting back to the bare minimum.

I have friends at other game companies that have had the same experience.

Again that makes total sense in theory but in actual practice that is not what is happening in the game industry. The game industry is currently a toxic environment because the big publishers are defying logic and doing the opposite of what you say they would do in the face of increased profits. Developers are going out of business and laying people off constantly because publishers suck them dry for everything they can and then leave them to die. Even publisher/developer houses have been in trouble for doing this to themselves. Look at EA getting sued because of the working conditions because rather than hiring more employees to get games done faster they just push their employees and they end up with obscene working hours.

The bottom line is that in any industry when a business is doing better a portion of the increased profits should be invested back into the business to make it grow and make it better but for whatever reason right now companies are not doing that they are increasing salaries at the top, increasing dividends sent out to stock holders, and doing just about everything but investing that money back into the business.

There are exceptions definitely but it is happening.

That's the short term. In the long term, if every publisher is making an additional $50 mil per game released, eventually they will sink that money back into the game dev process in order to outcompete their peers.

Also it will trickle down in the form of less games getting canned/studios getting shut down. Publishers will be more willing to take risks because the upside is higher.

I don't have a problem with always on personally (decent internet, getting FiOs at the end of the year), but the general idea if it pisses me off. When you consider only about 40% of the world population has internet, and even less have stable internet it makes for bad business to pull off that business decision like that.

Oh good, I knew I misheard. There was no way Sony's conference deserved anything less than a B+ (I gave it a solid A, while Xbone I gave a resounding C-)
