Penance is useless since lvl 75 cap imo , I use mantra, +500 HP for 2-3min can be usefull on several fights.
I still use 1/5 formless 4/5 pen and 5/5 invigorate, but that's because I solo alot even in salvage 2.0 and the 10o tick is nice to have for.. Pretty much any time. Please note that I have a insane chakra set and a pretty good auto regen set tibstack on top of invigorate. I
Formless is a god send in salvage, would not ever recommend skipping it.
1/5 Formless 5/5 penance 4/5 mantra here, if anything I'd drop the penance for more formless/mantra - that'll depend how often you want to do zhay/bhaf vs arra/ssr though.
More z/b you want to do, the more you'll need formless.
I really would not recommend doing 1/5 Formless Strikes. At 1/5, you're only getting 60% of your melee damage converted before resists. At 5/5 you get 80% + the extra 10% from the augmented Melee Cyclas +2. In lieu of people complaining about OHKOs from TP moves I also wouldn't recommend dropping Penance, which is -35% TP gain ~60% of the time on top of whatever dAGI is giving you.
Invigorate blocks other Regen effects, it's basically useless. I've never come across a situation where Mantra would have helped me either.
Lol it may be because I'm a galka but at 2400 hp I tend to get way more use out of invigorate, but I also spend a large amount of time soloing, on top of never having an issue from day 1 with super cerby me and thf the now spam exern to shijin for light sc's it tears him apart. At no time had salvage 2.0 been hard enough to require a change in how I play monk. If anything I get to use all the gear sets I spent farming while people thought it was a waste of time.
Also invigorate does not block other forms of regen it's overwritten, so it's a nice hold over while my mage is doing stuff, also are most of the monks who are having trouble with mobs using chakra gear sets? I know for a fact in hydra that shit has saved my ass alot. *657 hp chakra*
Well to be fair, mantra would be more useful against one hit KO moves than penance, the only problem is the duration and recast time. Invigorate is pretty much shit tier unless you solo a lot. I also now have no issues at all against cerbs without formless, with a thf anyways. Exent>shijin just rips them apart.
Every time I do BR II boss I get Marduk hand, or usu body or both... I always take the usu path.
Counterstance isn't always up(dispel), sometimes verethragna is better than spharai, and formless is still a damage increase over a 99% of the time useless invigorate for most people.
guess i'm one of the 1% that has had their mage run out of mp. it's also good when in AR2 my mnk is by himself while the whm runs around looking for the non-aggro chigoe NM. I'm sure there are other instances as well, just not going to put much effort into thinking about it. verethragna is better during things like voidwatch where you can easily keep AM3 up. once content moves on with the expansion, i foresee mythics/empyreans being crap compared to relics. i wouldn't mess my merits up to give myself 5/5 counter for the extremely rare occasion where counterstance gets dispelled.
but all being said, each mnk has different gear sets and different play styles, unless you're doing something silly like 1-2 merits in each different merit, w/e you choose should be fine.
Mythics (especially) and Empyreans (somewhat) are both largely aftermath dependent. They're good in meleeburns but not as good anywhere else. If we go back to Paladins holding monsters while ranged damage jobs (BLM, SMN, RNG, whatever) slowly kill it and DDs run in to WS, he might be right.
I doubt that will happen, though.
There is no reason to suspect that will be the case though now that most mage jobs can hit 7tick+ refresh prior to any other buffs and with a half decent brd you can get that well over 20/tick.
The only way they could make content that requires pld would also require the pld to have aegis or ochain, otherwise a melee in hybrid gear will be doing the same job.
As far as mythics go, 2 of the strongest (koga and ryun) can mitigate the dps loss from downtime a lot through JAs. Obviously this will hurt them a lot but its not as if these weapons need to be engaged for 3mins straight to remain competative with a strong relic or emp

Not if they change the enmity cap for PLDs and redesign how ATT/DEF impacts damage calculations.
Other DDs are well-enough equipped to eat the same damage a non-Aegis/Ochain PLD would, and they'll do more damage. The only advantage PLD would have over MNK or anyone capable of using Seigan would be the block rate from Ochain/Aegis. Making things hit harder is going to hurt everyone equally outside those with one or both of the aforementioned shields, and requiring either of them to be even passably useful is ridiculous in my opinion.
Unless they completely break the game this won't be the case. The game wasn't designed for 99 cap and the damage output available to all 2h DDs now, until they change the enmity system or make monsters that require ochain/aegis levels of damage reduction, pld will forever remain an add holding job and the last resort of the gimper shells that struggle on easy content.
My guess is they will try to mitigate DD tanking through various forms of damage resistance, but drk will still be able to keep hate and have the advantage of not being a crap tier DD.
Nvm
not even that. let's do a comparison real quick: spharai: ODT all the time 13% rate, no aftermath required. verethragna: ODD 30% of the time with AM1 for 30 sec. or 40% of the time with AM2 for 1 min. glanzfaust: occ. attacks 2x/3x (40%/20%) but with AM3 for 3 min.
so even if you kept the DD on all the time, on verethragna you could probably maintain AM2, but then you are missing out on 1 of your WSs, so let's say you just stick with AM1 and not have to worry about overwriting your AMs and holding TP. 30% ODD barely does more damage than 13% ODT assuming both are hitting for the same amount (which isn't the case since spharai has higher DMG and +att). Now include the 10 DMG increase that spharai has over verethragna, all the extra counter damage (increase of 14% counter rate on spharai 99), the +40 attack of spharai, and the buildup of TP for that first WS to get aftermath. Spharai clearly wins.
now compare to glanzfaust, you have to keep getting 300tp, that oh by the way your aftermath can't be overwritten. so losing out on 2 WSs at least if not more for while waiting for previous aftermath to wear off. now glanzfaust could arguably do better against an extremely evasive mob with its boost to focus (ignore loldodge, as that reduces our counter damage). the DMG is only 1 less, but again has no +att (unless you do AM2). will sorely lose out on damage from having to hold TP and less counter rate. o, and ascetics fury sucks. spharai wins again.
