Stricter gun control doesn't mean that civilian gun possession needs to be flat out outlawed, it just means that a gun license shouldn't be as ridiculously easy to obtain as it is right now.

Any household with low IQ or mentally unstable people shouldn't be allowed to have a gun inside. Yes, I said household. You could be the best person in the world but if someone who lives with you has no business holding a gun then you shouldn't be allowed to have one for safety reasons.
If owning a gun is that important for you then get better company.
Carefully designed tests could be a good starting point to identifty such individuals.

Of course I'm not denying that a seemingly harmless person could suddenly snap, steal a legally owned gun and go crazy with it. As I said, that would just be a starting point.

No... No. Sorry, but perfectly sane people with great lives and no mental health issues get upset sometimes. There is no way to screen or identify something snapping randomly on a normal person. This kid may not have had mental health issues.

My parents lost both of their jobs within the last 18 months, and my father may lose his other job next week due to some corrupt people in our towns government. Sometimes I would love to break the guys neck that started this shit. Doesn't mean I'm insane or have mental health issues, doesn't mean I want to go on a shooting rampage, just means I'm upset and would like karma to kick in and maybe this guy lose his job instead.

You can not identify something snapping in advance. Perfectly normal people with good home lives end up being the perpetrator in a lot of violent cases.

There aren't that many insane people. There are, however, a lot of people who can't handle negativity coming their way and decide to lash out with the easy way out: with guns. That negativity can be anything from rejection to failure to having their fucking cell phone being taken away by mommy and daddy. We need to get rid of the enabling tools that allow people who can't handle rejection or failure or stress to harm others on a mass scale.

The second amendment was about the right to bear arms regardless of the status of a militia. The courts have ruled that self defense falls under this. Defending yourself != fighting crime.

@Chips: Its considered an inalienable right - its akin to a birthright that all people in the country share. Its not so easy to just up and change it, even if you want it changed.

I understand that. It would undoubtedly be a an incredibly arduous process with some revolt, no less. But as America's closest comparable, Canada, which has much tighter regulation of gun control, is unarguably "safer" with regards to death via firearm.

We had a guy a few years ago who killed his wife and himself in the hospital, both 70+ years old. She was just diagnosed with an extremely painful and fatal illness, she wanted to die. He went home and got his gun, shot her, then shot himself cause he didn't want to live without her. Pretty sure he botched it on himself though, but died anyway later.
