Man, so that sounds like an entire 1st grade classroom right? Or is that 2nd grade?

At that age, they would either be in Kindergarten or First Grade.

Less than 48 hours after the Connecticut school shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, which took place on Dec. 14, the Westboro Baptist Church is already making plans to picket. The Westboro Baptist Church is known for picketing and protesting at funerals across the country.

“Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment,” Shirley Phelps-Roper tweeted on Dec. 15.

“They need to come back to Oklahoma,” Bryan Weathers, from Moore, said. “We know how to take care of them here.”

“Westboro 'God hates Fags' Baptist Church is planning to pciket at Sandy Hook, to praise 'God's judgment,'” Margie Phelps tweeted as well on Dec. 15.

Westoboro Baptist Church is known for carrying signs that read “Thank God for dead babies” and the like. It is unknown what kind of signs will be seen, if the Westboro Baptist Church actually pickets in Newtown, CT.

The Supreme Court ruled that it is legal for the Westboro Baptist Church to picket funerals. Despite that ruling, many cities and towns have passed laws that force the Westboro Baptist Church to stay a specific distance away from funerals.

I'm not going to quote the whole thing because it's long. Click the links if you want to read it all.

He said all the victims at Sandy Hook Elementary died of gunshot wounds and all the deaths have been classified as homicides. Carver said he personally performed seven autopsies and those children had between three and 11 wounds each. Two were shot at close range, the others at a distance.
Four doctors and 10 technicians, plus a college student working her first day with the medical examiner’s office, toiled into Friday night to identify the victims.
“I’ve been at this for a third of a century and my sensibility may not be the average man’s, but this is probably the worst I’ve seen,” Carver said.
Police have determined that the gunman was not buzzed into Sandy Hook, where he was once a student.

The mother of the suspected Sandy Hook Elementary School gunman, herself slain at the outset of the murderous rampage, was an avid gun enthusiast who liked to take her sons to the shooting range to practice their marksmanship, a friend tells NBC News.
“She had a pretty extensive gun collection,” Holmes said. “She was a collector, she was pretty proud of that. She always mentioned that she really loved the act of shooting.”
The Associated Press reported that authorities investigating the school shooting later recovered additional weapons -- a Henry repeating rifle, an Enfield rifle and a shotgun. It was not clear where those weapons were found.
Holmes, Nancy Lanza’s friend, said the 47-year-old single mother also frequently talked about how she was worried about Adam. She talked about “how he was an unstable kid,” he said. “She would talk about that. “She was very protective of him. I don’t … think she ever got major help for him. She just tried to handle it on her own. It was something she was definitely disturbed about.”

That story about the 27 year old teacher is gut wrenching as well.

I have trouble being bothered by them, to be honest. My brain runs on a scale of ridiculousness; you can irritate me to an extent with idiocy, but there is a tipping point where what you're doing/saying is so patently insane that it ceases to create a reaction at all

Wasn't there an entire classroom of students missing yesterday? What happened with that?

I personally wouldn't mind if someone went "crazy" and shot them up during their picketing.

Hate them or not, even the WBC has a right to spout their shit. They're attention seeking and thrive on reactions similar to your own.

    I'm not.

If there was another class that was missing 24 hours later it would probably be all over the news.

If anything though it was probably one of the 'reports' that the news outlets never bothered to correct

  15. #695
You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Gonna say thanks @ archi for that Mr. Rogers quote. Came in handy today.

I teach a writer's workshop class, and my students are all in middle school. We were working on an essay about "important people in our lives and how they influence us" and I mentioned without thinking my mom is a teacher in CT. one kid said fast, "we're not allowed to talk about Connecticut, but I'm not sure why, just something bad happened." I guess their schools are all telling students to tell their parents to not talk about it, and if the kids have questions to not ask their teacher, but their school councilor.

One kid was like "it's not like we won't see it on the news or w/e" and so I gave them the Rogers quote and said to think of that if they happen to see their parents watching the news or come across something on the internet about it.

I admit, I was kinda choking up while saying the quote. :/

Yeah I've had several things very similar, all slightly different but not varying too much.

Has anyone posted this "Celebrity's" take on the shooting? Facebook said it was Morgan Freeman.................................
    Spoiler: show
"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."
