WASHINGTON -- The nation's largest gun-rights lobby is calling for armed police officers to be posted in every American school to stop the next killer "waiting in the wings."

The group's top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, said at a Washington news conference that "the next Adam Lanza," the man responsible for last week's mayhem, is planning an attack on another school.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," LaPierre said.

He blamed video games, movies and music videos for exposing children to a violent culture day in and day out.

"In a race to the bottom, many conglomerates compete with one another to shock, violate, and offend every standard of civilized society, by bringing an even more toxic mix of reckless behavior and criminal cruelty right into our homes," LaPierre said.

I'm not sure who is going to pay for all of these police officers, in all of these schools, for the thousands of hours they will be standing around not actually protecting children from anything, but I do know who is going to make a bunch of money selling guns to them.

Yes, especially in high school - all LAUSD high schools have a police officer on duty. Problem with "police-izing" schools is that it increases the number of misbehaving students who get arrested and into the criminal justice system as opposed to receiving school counseling, the latter of which is significantly more effective at correcting problematic behavior.

Yes. V-tech had campus police as most colleges do, and Columbine had 2 armed guards on duty, didn't stop Klebold and Harris from murdering 15 kids.

Unless the shooter is right there, the officer on duty will always be at least one step behind before they catch up to the incident. If the shooter is right in front of the officer, barring the officer isn't distracted, is attentive, proficient enough to be able to recognize the signs of danger and not get ambushed, and is quick enough, they might be able to at least kill the person before the rampage begins.

The problem is almost 75% of law enforcement action is reactive. Happens on the other side of the school? Call for backup, get through a huge swarm of kids, possibly dealing with elements like tear gas, sprinkler system activation, panic, hysteria, the officers own SNS activation and finally get to the shooter and then kill them? Talk about a high stress situation...

I had the pleasure (or displeasure if you don't like training) of going through one of the first active shooter simulators for an ILEETA Course specifically for active shooters right after Columbine. The first scenario was running towards a building while 50 people are running out and the shooter is coming out of the building firing at the backs of the people running towards me. Basically I had to jump and shield my way through the thrall while trying to find cover in an open parking lot before I could get within 25 yards of the subject to kill him and my first three shots failed to hit vital targets (head, center of mass). And I have military training backing me up. And it was just a simulation.

So I haven't caught up on this much but when I picked up my parents at airport today and we were talking about it, my mom said they had stated that they found 2 specific violent games he played a lot online, anybody know what they're blaming?


It sounds like Call of Duty and Counter Strike but I can't find anything definitive.
