If only we had stricter firearm sale laws then obviously he wouldn't have been able to obtain his guns. In fact, if we made guns illegal for people under the age of 21 then never would have happened!

Oh good. So i guess we don't need to make more laws for gunshops, and we can instead target gun owners themselves.

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York came one step closer to enacting tougher gun laws on Monday, with the state Senate approving a set of broad changes in a late-night Monday vote and the Assembly expected to act early Tuesday.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo unveiled his proposal to bolster the state's gun laws late Monday after weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations with legislative leaders, with a full ban on assault weapons slated to take effect as soon as it is passed.

The Senate passed Cuomo's bill in a 43-18 vote around 11 p.m. Monday. The Assembly is set to take up the legislation when it returns to session at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Was I reading it right that all magazine sizes greater than 7 would be illegal? That seems kind of silly. The G17's default is 17. M9's default is 15. etc.

Well this pretty much makes almost all semi-auto handguns illegal in NY. Hope the lawful owners enjoy revolvers because that's pretty much all they get now. Even then the altering of words in the "Assault Weapons" section of the law makes it sound like semiautomatic handguns are banned regardless.

TL;DR: Fuck NY if you're a gun person.

I have a feeling that "NY-size" clips will be manufactured and sold. Also, are existing weapons grandfathered in? I assume so, lemme read.

    Ooh, I kinda like this:
Within one year of the effective date, all weapons defined as assault
weapons under the new "one-feature" test, as well as weapons
grandfathered in under the original assault weapons ban, must be
    registered.
Current owners of these banned weapons may transfer the
weapons only to a firearms dealer or transfer to an out of state
buyer. All registered owners will be subject to a review of
    disqualifiers by the State Police.

Damn, that's a pretty comprehensive new law. The banning of greater than 10-bullet clips (no grandfathering) is the only "reposession" part of it, and i like the requirement of trigger locks or safe storage if you live with a person who cannot legally own a gun. Also required background checks for any sale other than among immediate family members is good.

Also like that assault weapons can only be sold out of state or to registered firearms dealers, even if grandfathered.

Ah ah ah. Misread the "one-feature" section of the law. Overall I'm okay with and like these changes just so long as the sale of weapons which can by default take a larger clip are not banned.

Example: Iirc, in MA, you need a Class A LTC in order to obtain "large capacity" weapons legally. For example my friend's Beretta 92 is a 10+1 weapon. Even if it did have a 7 round clip, which would make it legal for a Class B owner, it still can't be bought since it has the 10+1 available without modification.

This seems like a really, really bad idea.

Family members are usually the most in denial about the nature and extent of someone's mental instability.

And of course a MA class A LTC is near impossible to obtain in certain towns.

Well, if they are a convicted felon or have been committed, most of the time an immediate family member will already know that, making such a sale illegal anyway - and if not, the background check wouldn't render them ineligible anyway.

I should be surprised by the number of people on my Facebook who think that background checks are bad ideas and that keeping guns out of the hands of mentally unstable people is going too far, but I'm not.

Since NY's current laws did nothing to curb gun related crime....lets add more!!!!!

Trigger lock law cannot be enforced, unless NY becomes a police state, where police can enter your home at any time to check (probably isn't too far off).

This will do nothing in the end. Gun violence will stay the same, or $20 says it increases. Just look at Chicago.

Probably something to do with penalties for people who own guns that get stolen and then used in crimes/murders/sprees.

Well, it's not really going to be much of a deterrent. Just a mere hindrance. Anyone who's smart enough to steal a gun and notice it has a lock, should be also smart enough to know there is a key somewhere and to look for said key. Or just use an amateur lock pick set to crack them open or saw them off. Will just force all sellers to ensure they sell the trigger lock with the gun.
