In any event, these laws don't effect criminals - either the guns are purchased outside of this system, or the guns are purchased inside of the system and just borrowed or stolen.

It's really not ok that I could go to virtually any gun show with a couple hundred bucks and walk out with a lightweight, folding stock, full on dedicated assault rifle, with no meaningful questions asked, that takes 10 minutes with a file to turn full auto.

The cheapest you'll find a rifle that isn't absolute shit is $500. And while 10 minutes with a file will let you turn the selector to full-auto its not going to work. There's a reason a fully automatic weapon costs at minimum $10,000.

The addiction argument is also silly. Is marijuana illegal? Yes. Is it naturally addictive? No. There are still millions of people illegally obtaining and using it. And guns are extremely addictive, there aren't many people picking them up and thinking "I don't like this." What about first time weed users? Typically they don't like it or it does nothing, they still try it again.

In the short term? Sure. In the long term? Most will certainly turn their guns over, or otherwise get rid of them. Worst case they sell them at massively inflated prices, to people who go and shoot up schools, which result in the police finding them. Sooner or later, most of the guns would disappear.

Who cares if it's absolute shit? Most AK's are absolute shit, that was kind of the whole point of them.

Further, most of the cheap shit like ak's and sks...'s... are actually designed so that you make them fire semi-auto by blocking continuous fire, meaning if you get rid of that obstruction, they're naturally full auto.

I'm always a fan out the full auto argument. Firing a weapon on full auto is good for dumping excess ammunition or suppressing an area but I have used it from a rifle with a semi-auto capability like 3 or 4 times outside of dumping ammo at the range.
