I have a Mossberg 500 Tact. Big badass shotgun that makes big badass noise. Multiple assailants, bad lighting, clear line-of-sight? It comes out. CQC in my house which in the dark is like trying to navigate a fucking maze filled with landmines (toys as landmines, most notably lego's that hurt like a mother fucker when you step on them)? Probably my Glock 19 if i'm in the office (service piece) or the 22 (quick-safe next to the bed) or the M9. So in about 90% of the situations, it'll be the Glock. If i'm being creative, i'll be sure to punch a few dozen rounds through the hall wall to get to whoever tries to shoot around the corner in the foyer thinking the dry-wall will protect them.

Of course there's always the M-14 or the AR if i'm just blindly shooting in to my house but there's a certain amount of responsibility one has to take in to consideration with powerful weapons like that. Would hate to hit someone else in my house or someone next door. Shotguns are nice but they're so impractical for CQC. More accuracy with the handgun. Also if you're purchasing for personal home defense, you should also be practiced in a battle plan for you and your family and train yourself to verbiage. I would hate to rely only on the racking of my gun to scare off an intruder, especially if it's a moron. If I see them, I'll be sure to light them up while screaming at them to eat the carpet. If I don't, the tried and true "I am ARMED! The police are on the way! Leave now or I will kill you!" always works.

So if the US is around 8k gun murders a year or so - I wonder how much that would be reduced with varying legislation:

Nationwide registration standardization/background check
Assault weapons ban reinstated (with no gun show loophole)
Handgun ban implemented nationwide

and, for the people that don't want some or any of the above, how many murders would have to be reduced for them to switch to being for it?

Like seriously, say we amend the constitution and ban (virtually) all handguns and non-hunting rifles like England did. If we get down to 5k gun murders a year, worth it? 3k? 800?

Obviously some people place no value on an armed population and would say a single life saved would be worth it, and some place such a value on the freedom to bear arms that the consequences of such freedom are completely irrelevant, but I'm curious what people would A) Expect and B) Demand to make such legislation "worth it".

I'm curious on what the statistics are on how many lives are saved by people shooting an intruder in their home. I know it happens, but I can't imagine the number is so astronomically high that guns should be allowed just for it.

I couldn't say either way, they've been doing it at soldiers funerals for awhile and I can't remember any of them being beat up. This is childrens though and people like to react completely differently despite what they do being just as bad in any case. I always maintained it was their right to do it when it impacted me and I'll maintain that they have that right still.
