I'm sure the FBI has more work to do with trolled people threatening to attack WBC than vice-versa.

Even the first amendment itself is evolving and constantly being refined.
I think the value of any continuous exposure and debate with an educated public is that
we will be able draw the distinction between actions
such as "labeling a religious group as hate group" and "calling out a hate group hiding under the religion umbrella"
It is a complicated and intricate task, but it is not impossible.
Bible's text have had a long history of being misused to suppress many different groups of minority,
and at the end we all got those right and stop the oppression,
I have confidence in our time to set it right as well.
wut
Redefining what free speech is reeks of hurt pussy.
I would take anything the SPLC says with a grain of salt.
They've never committed any serious crime. All of them have been arrested multiple times for Unlawful Assembly, Trespassing, Unlawful Entry, etc. but haven't done anything serious enough to garner much attention. Best thing to do is just kill them. Or at least kill the ones who've obtained zealot status and whisk the kids away to the nearest LBGT Lutheran Church to learn tolerance and forgiveness so the future looks brighter for the kids.

Let's assume that WBC gets shut down for good. Granted that being so open about their homophoby isn't exactly a smart move, but what makes you think that those 40 people would change their views? How does this act fix anything?
Homophobia is just one aspect of the general dumb-assedness these people perform off the regular. Protesting American soldiers funerals, the Connecticut shootings (not the shootings themselves but protesting the manner in which these children died citing they died as part of Gods will and the real sinners are the ones who are saying these kids died wrongly, etc), abortions, and anything that's a hot topic on American journalists lips that has anything to do with controversy that will gain them attention by going against the grain. I mean these people protest American Football for cryin' out loud. You don't get much more bat-shit insane.
40 people doesn't seem like much but with all the talks of in-breeding and recruitment from left-wing extremist groups, their numbers could easily swell within a decade or so. Not a threat now, but watch these assholes will probably survive the Holocaust and form their own cult ala Fallout and the Church of the Atom people.
When this country no longer exists, I'll be glad to put a bullet in each of them.
Until then, and because this country does exist, they can say whatever they'd like to.
To be fair, if people need to be told that acting like a religious zealot isn't ok, they are probably too far gone as it is.

Seriously, if a kid lives in a homophobic home but all their peers are like "ew, who does that?" Then you'd be surprised.
Not much you can do it they grow up in say the South, where it's abit more isolated and people don't want to change their outlook from 50+ years ago. I grew up in a super religious household(meaning they don't have good views on gays/etc cause DA BIBLE) and I turned out pretty meh on the subject and pretty open on things like gay marriage but I grew up in a big city and despite being pretty sheltered as a child, I still got alot of input from the outside world going to school/etc.
If someone wants to be a religious nut, home school their kids and brainwash them into their way of thinking there is really nothing we can do about it in several parts of the country.
I didn't mean specifically members of the WBC btw. But if you get others to look at the WBC with disdain, their their kids probably will, too. There's no magic cure for homophobia to disappear in a day, I'm talking long term here.
I think it's safe to say that everyone has family in their history (hundreds of years ago) that were religious fanatics. But bit by bit times change and people become more open as they see others being more open.
On the topic of gays, the US can get all huffy puffy all they want but the WBC is in sync with a numerous elected officials and people on the topic of gays even if those people don't throw up signs and shout that "God hates fags" in public. They pretty much do the same thing, just in a more politically correct fashion.
Just because the WBC has the gall (or sees the potential) of stirring the pot on numerous sacred cows and being vocal about it doesn't mean that they should be suddenly silenced because our sensibilities are offended. So long as they aren't committing acts of violence, they're free to be that example in society of what happens when you mix just a bit too much religion in your everyday life.
Gather your kids around and teach them that like the KKK, this is the final form of overly religious bigots. It's been pointed out before but give me a ring when they command a megachurch and fill the minds of adults with such things as the decadence of this world, the godlessness of America and the necessity of tithes.
Those people are the ones doing far more damage than a bunch of morons with picket signs trololololin' some soldiers funerals.
