It's a genuine acknowledgment that they're losing the issue and need to couch it in a different set of terms (it's not religious marriage, religious marriage is protected, this is just that gov't thing they call marriage, it's not important like religious marriage is).

The distinction is important because if it's secular God can still hate gays

I'm honestly kinda shocked that there aren't any gay-haters who cheer on marriage for homosexuals so they are in committed relationships and away from their young boys, not spreading AIDS everywhere with their rampant immoral promiscuity, etc. - trap them in marriages and keep them away from everyone else.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

You're placing faith in the intelligence of bigoted haters. I'm not sure who is more stupid in this sense: them, for having those beliefs or you for questioning why they haven't taken a somewhat logical approach to their hate.

I'm gonna go with you, because if you're not trolling, which can certainly be a possibility with you, then you should know better by now.

Not trolling, I'm surprised that I haven't heard that argument. It allows for the even more blatant demonization of gays, calling them AIDs carrying pedophiles openly as the reason why they should be sequestered from the general sexual populace.

They feel gays would demean marriage and even when married be aids carrying pedophiles, they would just force churches to host sex parties.

Meanhile, child rape commander criticizes homosexuality on his christmas message

The Pope has pressed his opposition to gay marriage today saying the future of mankind is at stake.

Pope Benedict XVI denounced what he described as people manipulating their God-given identities to suit their sexual choices - and destroying the very 'essence of the human creature' in the process.

He made the comments in his annual Christmas address to the Vatican bureaucracy, one of his most important speeches of the year.

Notice that Newt is changing his view purely on pragmatic grounds, not on principle. He doesn't care whether or not it's right, only that it's popular.

Of course that is still a positive development. The GOP must incorporate immigration reform and homosexuality or it will remain irrelevant, that's the take home.

That's the one truth that makes me grin a bit. Of course they won't change in 4 years, and that's the beauty of traditionalists, especially when they become a minority. They never, ever change on issues that define them, so as long as they don't find some way to pull the wool over the eyes of the independents or moderates, history will repeat itself for the next few cycles.

A conservative pundit not lusting after boys in dark spaces while publicly admonishing homosexuals and clinging to a bible just isn't a conservative pundit. Gotta rally that base, yo!

Yep, it's acknowledging being on the wrong side of history - something so blatantly obvious to anyone with a brain over the past 20 or so years.

I'm starting to wonder if there is any decision besides dissolving the Republican Party that would make some of you folks happy.

I'm not a fan of Newt, but even my own stance on gay marriage has changed. I used to pretty much vote along party lines like my parents, but to be honest, one day I just realized that it really doesn't matter if two dudes want to marry. It doesn't harm me, or my family, so I don't give a fuck. I voted for it in Washington even though I knew full well it would pass regardless of my vote.

I shouldn't have to say this but conservatives come in many flavors. A lot of us are quite dejected with the current choke hold some of them have on the party as a whole. The dumbass moves, illustrated by the last election but going far back from there, have pretty much left me with no party. I want to vote conservative, but at the same time I don't want to vote for someone as buttfuck retarded as some of these candidates are. And the prospect of not voting or voting liberal runs very much against the issues I do care about.

I guess my point is it's fine to think Newt is a twit, because he is, and it's fine to think that he's doing this not out of his own beliefs, but because the polls tell him so, but don't bash it as something completely horrible, because at the very least it opens the discussion for those of us who would like to see the party move away from retardedland and into something that at the very least can be elected.

His stance hasn't fucking changed. It's called pandering.

What needs to happen - Jews acknowledging the Palestinian state.
Pandering - Jews saying that Palestinians deserve a state so that they don't lose U.S. Support.

I'm well aware that they can't change overnight. The problem is that it isn't a change in stance or belief or personal conviction. They realize that the crowd they have been pandering to is slowly dying off and they are wanting to get votes. It's politics as usual.

It isn't some personal fucking revelation. I'm pretty sure Newt and all the rest of the Republicans have had gay friends and poor friends for years. They were just the minority. Now that they see that their tired bullshit isn't going to get them swing votes, they're coming out and saying this to strengthen their "base".

If it was real change I would welcome it. It's facetious, so I don't. Simple as that. I hope things do change. I'm not going to sit here and act like this is what everyone's always wanted, because it isn't.

sorry, no. If you don't think gays should have the same rights as you, you are horrible. If you think poor people deserve their poorness, you are horrible. If you think Obama is a muslim Kenyan, you are horrible. And if you think Obamacare is the biggest tax increase in history, you are horrible.

Did you read what I said at all? I'm guessing you didn't, because I agree with you that it isn't something he believes, which isn't a change. I said, and I quote "because at the very least it opens the discussion for those of us who would like to see the party move away from retardedland and into something that at the very least can be elected." But thanks for proving my point that there are people who will refuse to see any positive in anything conservatives do.

    And then there's this asshole...

Woah boy, over-generalizations ahoy. I guess you didn't read the part where I said I agree that gays should have the same rights, and voted FOR gay marriage in my state. No where did I make any comment about the poor, nowhere did I make any comment about Obama's nationality or religion, and nowhere did I hint at Obamacare.

Hell, I said Newt was horrible. Or did you miss that too?

I'm going to take a sit right here, I just need to rest a second. Hold on let me place this alcohol-soaked towel on my forehead. Ahhhh, that feels good, man. Anyway, Sir Godel would have killed himself 10x over after having read your posts. I don't mean to sound crass but you have to be borderline psychotic, I mean you have to.
