New regime undecided on Brandon Weeden as QB of the future

BEREA, Ohio -- The jury is still out for the Browns' new regime on rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden, league sources have said.

That's because they're not sure who their coach will be next season, and whether he will want Weeden as his guy. The Browns are likely to part ways with coach Pat Shurmur and General Manager Tom Heckert as early as Monday.

Their short list of coaching candidates will probably include some of the hot names other teams will be vying for, including Oregon coach Chip Kelly, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman and Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians.

Weeden's future depends largely on the how the expected new coach views him and whether he will fit the new scheme. Browns offensive coordinator Brad Childress said he expects Weeden to take a big leap in his second year, and Shurmur has been pleased.

"I think that's a question probably for next week, but there are a lot of things that I'm very, very happy about watching him play," said Shurmur. "Then, of course, now that he's had a season under his belt, he'll come back here in the off-season, much like a lot of quarterbacks in this league that went on to have really good careers -- just pick one. They all had rookie years where they were much better in their second year. I think he's shown quite a bit this year that's good."

In November, Browns CEO Joe Banner told The Plain Dealer the club would spend the final seven games trying to determine if Weeden was their quarterback of the future. "It's an extremely important decision for this organization to get right," he said.

The evaluation was cut short when Weeden left the Denver game with a shoulder injury that will keep him out of Sunday's finale in Pittsburgh. In his final six games, he led the Browns to a 3-3 record, throwing five touchdowns and five interceptions. Overall, he threw 14 TDs and 17 INTs and had a 72.6 rating. The evaluation of Weeden will undoubtedly take into account all of the young skill players around him, including rookie receivers Josh Gordon and Travis Benjamin.

But Weeden will have to overcome his rating, which is 32 out of 34 ranked quarterbacks, and his more comprehensive ESPN total QBR, which is 36th out of 38 QBs.

Just as long as we don't draft another quarterback in the first round or go after Vick or something similarly retarded...

Alex Smith is a smart choice for MIN, a QB who plays a clock manager, with the #1 RB, and the potential to throw the ball if he needs too, that could make for a deadly clock killing team. If MIN works on their defense, and all their players stay healthy, I can see MIN making moves into a ground and pound offense, with a QB flare.
