Robin Sachs, a British actor best known for playing the slippery, mercenary mage Ethan Rayne on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, has died, according to the BBC. Sachs’ death is described as “sudden and unexpected” on his official website, though no cause is given. He was 61.
Though two of his earliest roles were in the miniseries Brideshead Revisited and Dynasty: The Reunion (where he replaced Gordon Thomson as Adam Carrington), Sachs was far more suited to science-fiction and horror stories than lavish costume dramas, beginning with his screen debut in the Hammer-produced Vampire Circus. Over the years he had numerous appearances on shows such as Babylon 5, Star Trek: Voyager, and Torchwood: Miracle Day, in addition to small parts in movies such as The Lost World: Jurassic Park and providing voices for video games such as Resident Evil: Damnation and the Mass Effect series.
In 1999’s Galaxy Quest, Sachs gave one of his most memorable performances—albeit buried under mounds of latex that made him entirely unrecognizable—as Sarris, the alien warlord who terrorizes the universe, while also being unusually media-savvy for an extraterrestrial.
Sachs was first introduced to the Buffyverse in the seminal episode “Halloween,” initially appearing as the kindly owner of a costume shop who helps Buffy realize her princess dreams, only to be revealed as a sinister worshipper of chaos who makes it so everyone turns into their costumes. Subsequent appearances fleshed out Ethan’s background as a former associate of Giles, back in his wilder “Ripper” days, with Ethan’s fascination with black magic and love of disorder leading him down a far darker path.
Ethan Rayne returned several times to terrorize Sunnydale for his own amusement in some of Buffy’s best episodes, whether he was cursing the titular chocolate bars in “Band Candy” or turning Giles into a Fyarl demon. As an ordinary human—and a weak one, at that, given how easily Giles always kicked his ass—Ethan was an unusual yet effective villain, embodying the show’s down-to-earth, sardonic approach to the supernatural in Sachs' underplayed smirk.
NOOOOO NOT MY ZAAED MASSANI![]()

STUART FREEBORN REMEMBERED
February 06, 2013
Makeup and creature effects legend Stuart Freeborn has passed away at age 98, leaving a legacy of unforgettable contributions to film, including classic characters Chewbacca, Yoda, and Jabba the Hutt from the original Star Wars trilogy. Before his involvement on Star Wars, Freeborn was responsible for the creation of the apelike human ancestors in the "Dawn of Man" sequence of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and memorably transformed Peter Sellers into multiple roles in Doctor Strangelove.
"Stuart was already a makeup legend when he started on Star Wars," said George Lucas. "He brought with him not only decades of experience, but boundless creative energy. His artistry and craftsmanship will live on forever in the characters he created. His Star Wars creatures may be reinterpreted in new forms by new generations, but at their heart, they continue to be what Stuart created for the original films."
Leading the makeup department for Star Wars, Freeborn was responsible for the creation of Chewbacca. He and his team designed and built many of the fan favorite creatures in the Mos Eisley Cantina sequence, including Greedo, Walrus Man, and Snaggletooth. For The Empire Strikes Back, in addition to his work on the tauntaun and wampa ice creature, Freeborn's pivotal contribution was the development of Yoda. Empire director Irvin Kershner would note that Freeborn quite literally put himself into Yoda, as the Jedi Master's inquisitive and mischievous elfin features had more than a passing resemblance to Freeborn himself.
For Return of the Jedi, the definitive "monster movie" of the Star Wars trilogy, creature development was split between two teams: an ILM team led by Phil Tippett, and a UK-based shop led by Freeborn. Freeborn oversaw the development and fabrication of the massive Jabba the Hutt puppet, as well as the creation of the memorable Ewoks.
Throughout his career, Freeborn was joined by his wife, Kay (who passed away in 2012), and his son, Graham (who passed away in 1986), in his makeup work. His other credits include Oliver Twist, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Omen, Superman I-IV, Top Secret!, and The Great Muppet Caper.

Mark Balelo, a buyer who appeared on several Storage Wars episodes, has died. Balelo's body was found on Monday, two days after he was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine. It's believed that he committed suicide via carbon monoxide poisoning. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
Balelo, 40, was one of Storage Wars’ flashier characters, always showing up in sharp clothes and wielding upwards of $50,000 in cash from his man purse (or “murse”). He even sold custom versions of his signature accessory on eBay, complete with an autographed picture of himself.
In 2011, Balelo bought a storage locker that contained a 1938 Action Comics book that had been stolen from a locker belonging to Nicolas Cage a decade earlier. Balelo returned the comic book, which was valued at $1 million, to Cage. Last year it was reported that Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant planned to turn the story into a movie for Lionsgate.
