Fuck that's gotta be some shit if you can't get in touch with your child/family member that would have been at school that day.
People who act like it's a question of either or confuse me just as much as people who think nothing needs to be done. Why not do something about mental health AND have stricter gun laws. Nobody wants to take your guns away, just make it harder for people to get them.
The way you responded it it seemed like you were dodging his obvious gun point. But I apologize if I misread it.
I think something needs to be done about both, on equal measures.
No, I think guns are too easy to get in this country even for regular, sane people. Considering in some states its easier to get than it is to get a driver's license. There needs to be waiting periods and mandatory gun safety classes.
What's helping with mental health even look like? Is everyone who gets laid off of a job going to get a state worker to come in and interview them (ala the reporter guy - the last shooting we had)?
When it's revealed who this guy was and why(possibly) he did it I doubt he escaped a mental ward or something. Was probably a regular enough dude to everyone around him until he started shooting
Or is it like school programs/curriculum that teaches kids how to deal with stress, overwhelming disapproval, lack of friends, etc? That's at least interesting to me. "Mental health problem" just sounds like someone doesn't know wtf is up trying to divert attention away from the most obvious solution, which is gun regulation+
so talk about it. What do you mean by addressing mental health issues?
Not to mention that, with some level of variance, the frequency of mental health issues in first world countries is (I believe) fairly level across the board. Certain countries are better/worse at treating it, yes.
There is an unequivocal chasm between gun violence per x people in the US versus other first world countries. Even ones with similar levels of healthcare.
Mental health does need to be addressed, but this is first and foremost a gun issue. Sorry. They are not on the same footing.
How about solve the gun issue first, then go after the mental health issue right after. Access to guns will always trump mental health issues. However, both can be identified and solved in tandem.
This isn't even fucking debatable at this point. It will always be a throw away post to say "people are ignoring mental health issues." How about no?
Maybe I should become a psychiatrist.
"My issue is more important because I said so."
Okay. Good luck getting anything solved then. You should be thankful people even give a shit about yours.
From everything I've heard and read so far, I am not seeing anything about male victims, only female.
It's really weird seeing news anchors that I see every day reporting on this. It's sad that this is the most unusual part of the experience for me, we see stories like this way too much.
The same people who allegedly want to address "mental health" typically don't want universal healthcare or to divert more funds to make it possible for comprehensive mental healthcare education and for it to be anything more than an afterthought.
