I don't think any of the people here are even arguing against mental health. Yes, people have problems, this is obvious. The much larger, looming problem is the fact that access to weapons to carry out such atrocities are readily available. It shouldn't be to the point where you go outside and get killed doing routine shit. There is a large problem when the Huff Posts states that there have been 45 school shootings in US alone, not even count other shootings. Why then do we make it so easy to allow these people weapons to continue to pile up the body count. In this instance, this kid didn't even have a mental health issue, he was just a typical guy who hated his life and took out his frustrations before it ended.

We as a nation can't even track all of the shit going on when people post online. Even more so when people can hide behind anonymity. All the more reason to make it more difficult to access a weapon.

I own several and each has a purpose that it excels at or is the sole purpose. If I went shooting ducks with my rifle not only is it unethical it's also illegal. Trying to CC a 28" OU shotgun isn't going to work nor is any level of loading for 20g practical for self-defense.

That doesn't change the fact that you being allowed to legally own that much weaponry purely for your hobbies is exactly part of the problem. "Criminals will always find a way to get guns!" "Most gun owners are responsible" Statements like these are generally true, but statistics don't lie. In places with more lax gun laws and more lax restrictions on amount of guns you can own - there is more gun violence. Period.

If what it takes for there to be even a small decline in the amount of mass shootings in this country is that you, and people like you, have a little bit less freedom of weapon choice when going hunting - that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Edit: To liken it to any other relevant restriction in the history of civilization - a la Ace's and Quicklet's posts - I like to drive fast. I really, really, really like it. I'm an above-average driver, but on public roadways when there are people around, I generally do my best to follow posted speed limits. If I don't, I run the risk of being ticketed or arrested. Why? Because indulging in something I like to do creates an unnecessary risk for others whether I am good or responsible or not.

The data I was looking at (Mother Jones sourced, on phone not able to linksauce) indicated that Vermont did indeed have more gun deaths per 100,000 than California, though the difference was very small.

Also, for what it's worth I am fully aware that handguns are, by a large margin, the most prolific killer among all varieties of guns.

It's a lot harder to kill many, many people in a short amount of time without an automatic of semi-automatic weapon. Non-automatic rifles for hunting? Not really a mass-killer of men.
