Carson broke into Jack Dillon’s home at 112 Water St. at 2:44 a.m. on Oct. 19. Dillon was sleeping on the floor in the living room and dining room area with a handgun nearby, Elyria Police Lt. Andy Eichenlaub has said. He was sleeping there to make sure no one came in the house because someone had broken in the previous night and stolen a flat-screen TV, Eichenlaub said. He was woken up by Carson and Dillon called out to him. Carson then lunged at Dillon who shot him, police said.

On the recording to the 911 call, Linda Dillon is heard saying, “Oh my God. We just had a break-in and we shot him.” She added “We knew he was coming back because he unlocked my window and we noticed it was unlocked.” Police are still investigating whether Carson had any part in the Oct. 18 burglary.

The Loganville mother of two assumed the knocks on her front door Friday afternoon were from a solicitor.

“Don’t answer,” she yelled to her 9-year-old twins playing downstairs.

When the visitor began repeatedly ringing the doorbell, she called her husband at work.

“Get the kids and hide,” he told his wife.

As he dialed 911, his 37-year-old spouse, who works from home, collected the children and hid with them in a crawlspace adjoining her office. By that time, the intruder had forced his way into the three-story residence on Henderson Ridge Drive with a crowbar, authorities said. He allegedly rummaged through the home, eventually working his way up to the attic office.

“He opens the closet door and finds himself staring down the barrel of a .38 revolver,” said Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman, who relayed the woman’s narrative to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He asked that her name be withheld.

The woman fired six bullets, five of which hit Paul Ali Slater in the face and neck area, Chapman said. But Slater was still conscious.

This is the American shootings Thread isn't it? Those burglars wouldn't need thousands of dollars in surgery or funeral arrangements if they hadn't been shot by those evil guns.

hey retard. You do realize more people are murdered than people are actually saved right? This woman btw put her life in danger as well considering it could have gone badly and the gun taken from her.

There's about 250 justifiable homicides a year with a gun, and about 8000 murders. Feel free to post about current successful defense shootings if you like, but as Qalbert stated succinctly, this isn't the old-ass articles thread.

The woman did the right thing, retreating as best she could and calling the police, using the gun when out of options.

and also let's not pretend that "justifiable homicide" means that the shooter or someone else would've been hurt if they hadn't fired either, most of these are popping robbers, not rapist/murderers.

    http://www.businessweek.com/articles...n-self-defense

While the actual numbers are not known, defensive use of a gun is estimated at between 100,000 and 2 million times a year, depending on the research you are reading.

Of the 30,470 firearm-related deaths in the United States in 2010, 19,392 (63.6%) were suicide deaths, and 11,078 (36.4%) homicide deaths. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_vio..._United_States

I DON'T consider killing an attacker as the only way to succeed in defending yourself.

You add a gun to a home invasion/burglary where most criminals that aren't retarded don't carry guns is potentially lethal.

Do you think that handgun ownership generally improves public safety or degrades it?

Also when a stat suggests something occurs between X times and 20X times its completely meaningless. Remember that Trayvon Martin experienced "successful gun defense", an excellent data point.

The risk/reward ratio significantly changes when a firearm enhancement to your felony crime is on the table.

In general without laws forbidding carry of handguns by law abiding public citizens, I believe it would improve public safety. I believe in the vetting process that certain counties in California use as a guideline for issuance of CCW permits. Other counties in CA do not issue (read: LA, Orange, San Fransisco) I believe this skews the statistics by allowing more unlawful carry by people who may not have good intentions than legal carry by people who are vetted by LEA.

I am a bit biased being raised in a house with honest people who carry regularly, both my dad and uncle are retired law enforcement and never leave home without their concealed carry pistol.
