Another person shot by their family for being mistaken as an "intruder", this time a father shot his 14 year old son. People are so paranoid these days and they shoot people in broad daylight without even looking to see who/what they are shooting. It's ridiculous

But seriously gotta love the level of paranoia that's been drummed up. So much of the population seems to think violent crime is skyrocketing thanks to the media meanwhile it slowly goes down

It's the biggest enigma on both sides - gun ownership and total number of guns has skyrocketed while violent crime continues to go down. It shoots down (puns!) the rationale for owning a gun for self defense and also that guns everywhere lead to violent crime.

or the relationship between the two is weaker than the impact third party variables are having on violent crime

Sure (and probably) - it's just fun that a single stat works against the motivations of both groups.

I mean, you could argue that the fact we hold a record number of prisoners, the increased methods of surveillance available to the public, demographics, the possibility that unemployment benefits have kept people from having to resort to misdemeanor theft.

There's a lot more factors going to this than just gun stocks going up because people are buying guns because they're afraid of obama taking everyone's guns. And if anything, I see more people buying guns who already own them than people who didn't own them in the first place. So we'd have to correlate the data to % of family owning guns over time in comparison to how much crime has been reduced.

I'd like to see the data at the least.

Edit: At the same time you could look at % family ownership versus family homicides to see if more guns help.

the latter correlative statistics request may be beyond my present google-fu, but as to the relationship between gun proliferation and gun ownership by household-- the phrase often gets tossed around that Americans own more guns than ever before and while accurate it indicates the growing number of guns being obtained by existing gun owners and not a greater number of individuals purchasing guns. the number of households with even even a single gun present has declined massively from a high of over 50% to around 1/3

Now I feel bad about skewing the numbers because I own 10+ firearms. But then again several of which don't even have serial numbers so they wouldn't have ever been added to the total number.

I doubt they are pulling guns-in-America numbers from some sort of serial number database. They are likely estimates from years of polling.

They've tracked and counted sales from manufacturers as well as imported firearms since 1968.
