Not that I don't think it happens, but I question the "majority" part of your statement. I've always heard it's mostly through the constant buy/sell changing hands situations.
Source is the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Seems that straw purchases are actually in the lead by a slight amount though, so I was wrong there. It's an older study from 2001 examining 1997 crimes, so things may be different today - but I'm skeptical since our method of controlling firearm purchases is largely unchanged.

The internet changed that quite a bit. Retailers with an FFL have to send to another FFL still, but with social media came a host of issues. Just about every locale has a facebook group centered around buying/selling/trading guns. And unless someone is making a business out of reselling guns, no background check is required for those transactions(in my state and many others). All I've been required to do for some sales is verify an age and residency. There's also places like armslist.

Right, but then as far as I know there's no study which has determined that those types of purchases are the source of firearms for criminals at any sort of statistically significant number. I don't think the average criminal goes on Facebook groups or armslist to buy a gun, when they can just get their friend or family member to buy one for them.

Oregon standoff: Militia member loses foster kids, blames ‘pressure from the feds’ http://on.rt.com/725h
Robert “LaVoy” Finicum and his wife Jeanette have fostered more than 50 boys over the last decade at their ranch near Chino Valley, Arizona. The couple is licensed and has a care contract with the Catholic Charities Community Services. Many of the children came from mental hospitals, drug rehabs and group homes for emotionally distressed youth, he told Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB).

Somehow not surprised they're foster parents. People who take in foster kids are almost always creepy religious weirdos who molest them and screw them up even worse than they already are

As soon as they're out of the hospital they better be in custody...ain't no reason to pull a gun out when disputing a charge. Imagine if credit card disputes all went the same way...

I've seen a dipshit LGS pull a gun and threaten to shoot a guy that was declining to leave after >implying the storeowner's wife had stolen some parts off a repair job after some things came up missing. Guy was pretty unfazed and walked out to sic the cops and the storeowner realized he had majorly fucked up and raced out after the guy with the till money to fix things. Apparently it worked because the business is still going years later.

Storeowner is borderline functional on all fronts. He has some serious bipolar issues combined with some wasting disease so he's either hopped up on pills being weird or coming down chainsmoking in the fetal position in the back corner of the store.

Moral of the story? Hang them both.

Moderate to severe exposure from lurking. Skins lesion, hair loss, and increasingly secular about the AR-15 platform which I didn't care about or even own five years ago. Probably also doesn't help I've probably also caught the gays from /fit/ because things like seeing a bolt action shoved up an ass, dicks in receivers, and dragon dildos don't even faze me anymore.

Because the tech is prone to failure. RIFD band gets torn off of you while in a struggle? No more weapon to retaliate with. Bio-metric Sensor fails? Someone who shouldn't have access does, or a person that should doesn't.

There's already enough issues with 100 year old tech like the grip safeties on XD's being prone to failure, much less adding new tech that requires wearables or embedded fingerprint readers.

Any links to current palm/fingerprint readers being unreliable? Any data to support that any number of people have had it fail on them "while they were struggling"?

The case against smart guns is 100% about making the product more expensive to make (less profits for the gun manufacturers) and 0% about it actually being a bad idea.

Less than pristine clean hands, device not able to maintain operation when exposed to moderate levels of carbon buildup, device being exposed to 500+ rounds causing read errors, being near a radio interference device causes RFID read errors, RFID sniffers can bypass the lock, actual removal of devices is as simple as field stripping, public mistrust because a certain Smart Gun manufacturer was also trying to sell a jamming device to LEO, and the same company pricing their models far far beyond reason ($1800) yet only selling their pistol in .22LR (not generally an appropriate caliber for self defense).

I'm in favor of Dredd guns but the current level of technology to ensure operation and being highly tamper resistant just isn't here yet.
