He turned around to find the five-year-old shot in the head. The five-year-old, whose name was not released, was taken to Children's Medical Center in Dallas for surgery. At last report, he remained in critical condition.

Police found two 15-year-old female sophomores lying next to each other on campus each dead of a single gunshot wound, said Breeden. A weapon was found next to them.

Detectives are still processing the scene but are not looking for any other suspects or persons of interest.

Police referred to the situation as an "isolated incident," and were quick to reassure parents that their children "are safe" and that this was not an active shooter-type situation.

The circumstances of what led to the shooting are still under investigation and the relationship between the two girls was not immediately clear.

Students have been released from Independence High School, according to the district.

However, parents are not allowed on campus.

Parents have to meet at the Walmart near 75th Avenue and Glendale Avenue and will be bused to the school to be reunited with their student. Parents need to have identification to pick-up their student.

Well not every state has it, two, there's a huge appeals process and only so many court dates available, and three, a lot of states that do have the death penalty right now can't enforce it cause they can't get the drugs necessary for it.

I've never understood why we felt it necessary to kill people with IV drugs after strapping them to a table. It would be so much easier and more humane to use a non-toxic gas (e.g. helium or nitrogen) and asphyxiate them to death.

The gas chamber was ruled cruel and unusual as the asphyxiation causes pain and distress. California used to use it. That's why they use the multi drug cocktail, it's like going to sleep for surgery before you die so you don't feel anything.

Michigan not only doesn't have the death penalty, they basically never have. They're one of the few states that has never put anyone to death.

They must not have been using either of the gases I mentioned. Your body can't tell the difference between oxygen and helium (that's why it doesn't hurt your lungs to breathe in a helium balloon for the voice effect), but it will make you pass out and die rather quickly if you were only breathing it in. Maybe they were pumping the chamber full of CO2? That would hurt like a bitch.

Yeah, wiki article on gas chamber says they're using poisonous gases (cyanide). The following article suggests that inert gas asphyxiation would be the single most humane method of executing people, because they have no way of knowing that the oxygen level in their blood is thinning and then they're suddenly unconscious, and dead soon after.

Just go to the prison dentist and grab an NO2 canister and use that, doesn't get much more humane than death by laughing gas.

Not that I support the death penalty in general but we make it way too stupidly complicated to kill people.

The only reason lethal injection doesn't cause "distress" is because they inject a numbing agent before pushing lethal levels of potassium into your blood (which gives you a very convulsive, usually painful heart attack). There have been dozens of cases where the anesthetic didn't take or the patient was resistant and they had quite the painful death.

Some have even survived all three injections and have to be dosed again.

Suffocating would be much better and less painful if you just numbed them up good.
